Adventures in World Building #18 - Ikeeri Part 1

Welcome to Adventures in World Building #18. Previously in AWB, we finally discovered Bob's true name of Umbria! Today, we're going to be working on Umbria's second sentient species: the Ikeeri. This time around, unlike with Rhialto, the term "Ikeeri" is without a doubt the name of a species. In time, we'll also develop some races of Ikeeri. Currently, there are three races to develop but there is plenty of room for a fourth and possibly a few other rarer variants. Before we get started, we're going to need a new To-Do list series (and I'll have to make yet another auxiliary journal sometime after this AWB for Ikeeri details).

Ikeeri To-Do List

[1] Develop Ikeeri to a satisfactory extent.
Ikeeri in General

So what is exactly is an Ikeeri? Ikeeri are a furred, bipedal mammalian species of sentient beings that live on the surface land of Umbria. Ikeeri have been citizens of Umbria since the earliest days of development over fifteen years ago. They are heavily inspired from various types of foxes.

Ikeeri are humanoid in basic shape. They have a head, a torso, two arms, two legs, and a tail. They tend to be close to human height though in some cases their ears can give them the appearance of being a little taller than they actually are. There are three main races of Ikeeri: Felkri, Darkri, and Kunri. They are most easily distinguished by fur color but there are other physical differences such as general body type, ear size, and teeth arrangement that set them apart. We'll get more into the races a little later.

Feet
All Ikeeri have two feet, a trait that is extremely common amongst the sentient species of Umbria. Ikeeri feet are paw-like in appearance. They are covered with fur and have pads on the bottoms of the toes and the bottom of the foot itself. Ikeeri feet have four toes with the middle two extending out further than the outer two. Their pad colors vary most with race and may come in colors from soft pinks to darker brown-ish-black (sometimes almost blackish-blue) velvets. Ikeeri paw pads are known to be almost universally ticklish if not calloused.

Ikeeri feet also have semi-retractable claws on each of their toes. Their foot claws always show to some extent but can be extended further out for defensive purposes or for utility purposes such as running. If not heavily used, they can become uncomfortable long and require trimming. Darkri are known for having some of the largest claws (both feet and hands) amongst Ikeeri races.

Legs
Ikeeri have digitigrade legs. They have all the leg parts that we as humans have but some parts, like the ankle, are elongated. Ikeeri leg muscles excel most when it comes to jumping. This gives Ikeeri quite an advantage when it comes to basketball slam dunks but unfortunately, basketball does not exist in Umbria (at least I'm not aware that it does).

Torso
Ikeeri torsos are roughly what you'd expect from a torso. They have a pelvic bone and they have a rib cage. Like with the rest of their bodies, they are covered in fur. Being a mammalian species, females start developing breasts at puberty and breastfeed their young. Ikeeri breasts tend to be in proportion with the rest of their bodies, not being all that different from human breasts (except furrier).

Hands
Ikeeri hands are much like human hands but a little different. They have five fingers, one of which being a thumb. At the ends of their fingers are semi-retractable claws instead of fingernails. The claws rest partially within the ends of their fingers and can be extended in defense or for use with any other task that would benefit from their use. Unlike fingernails, Ikeeri claws tend to be considerably more potent at cutting flesh. If not used often, they can grow uncomfortably long and require trimming.

Following in a similar format like their paws, Ikeeri hands also have pads on the underside of their hands on the palm and on the bottoms of the ends of their fingers. These pads are considerably smaller than the ones on their paws amd are also sensitive but not generally ticklish. At this point, I'm not entirely sure if their palm pads are one whole pad or separated into two pads, one on the upper palm at the base of the fingers and one on the bottom middle of the palm. It's a small detail to work out but it deserves a to-do list entry.

Ikeeri To-Do List [2] Figure out whether Ikeeri palm pads are single or double pads.

Arms
Not a lot of special details about Ikeeri arms besides them also being covered in fur. They aren't notably powerful though Darkri tend to be the strongest race of Ikeeri, often capable of lifting heavier loads and cleaving skulls in two with greater ease than other Ikeeri.

Tail

All Ikeeri have a tail attached right above their rump. Ikeeri tails are extensions of their spine and are often the fluffiest part of an Ikeeri's body. While not prehensile, Ikeeri have moderate control over their tails. Ikeeri tails, along with their ears, tend to be accurate indicators of their owner's emotions. A happy Ikeeri may subconsciously have their tail swish back and forth and a sad Ikeeri's tail will most likely hang low and lifeless.

Hidden underneath the fur of the tail are various scent glands that Ikeeri also use for communication. It is commonly thought that the most prominent use swishing motion of an Ikeeri's tail is meant to waft pheromones into the air and gain the attention of potential mates.

Ikeeri tails are notorious for being some of the most high-maintenance tails of all the sentient species of Umbria. Male or female, most Ikeeri generally prefer to stay well groomed and if only one part of their body is going to be groomed, the tail is a likely candidate due to the social attention it often receives.

Head
Ikeeri heads look far more fox-like than human-like. Unlike humans, Ikeeri have muzzles that are full of a combination of sharp teeth and flat-ish molars at the back (allowing them to be omnivorous if they can tolerate the taste). They also have fairly long tongues due to the length of their mouth and the internal structure of their noses is much larger than most sentient species of Umbria, giving Ikeeri one of the most powerful senses of smell among sentient species. Ikeeri muzzles end with a usually slightly wet nose and possibly some whiskers (that will need a to-do list entry).

Ikeeri have two eyes in their heads along with two large ears (ear size varies by race, Kunri tend to have the shortest ears of all Ikeeri) on top of their heads. Due to the shape of and placement of their ears, human sunglasses and headphones don't fit well on Ikeeri heads.

Ikeeri heads, like the rest of their bodies are covered with fur and tend to be fluffiest around the cheeks. Ikeeri also tend to have more human-ish hair on the tops of their heads. The texture is probably a bit different than regular human hair but it can be easily styled and worked with.

Ikeeri To-Do List [3] Figure out whether Ikeeri have whiskers or not (normal foxes do)

That pretty much sums up most of the basic physical aspects about Ikeeri in general. We need to go and do some Rhialto world creation myth building in the next AWB but we'll most likely return to Ikeeri in AWB #20. From there, we'll dive into different Ikeeri races and possibly some more specific anatomy and physiology of Ikeeri.
