Well, ponies are strong animals for the beginning. He must have found that for compensate her weaks wings, he can be strong elsewhere. And seeing that the earth ponies were the stronger, he must have envisaged to be strong as them even being an pegasus. Or somethiing like that that lead him to be this.... beefy.
