In trying to keep down my costs for my customer I do use electric fence wire for most of my pieces. I only use stainless steel for custom orders. I have found that the high nickle content in the galvinization process that red brand does makes the items easy to clean and rust free. Unless of course they just leave it setting in standing water. I worked some with aluminium, but had two main problems. First if I used the same size 17 gauge wire the rings would mishap into an oval after just a few times wearing the item. Second the cost, in my area aluminium is almost twice the cost of galvanized steel.

I've been thinking about making a chainmaille skirt, is this welded or butted? If butted does it hold up to being sat on or do the rings bend apart?

This skirt is made of 17 gauge butted steel rings with an inside diameter of 1/4". It has held up to normal use (sitting, standing, walking, and dancing) just fine for the last 5 years with almost no bending of the rings at all.

Sweetness, thanks. Is the 17 gauge in standard wire gauge or american wire gauge?

Standard wire gauge. I really only pay attention to the standard gauge listing on the rolls. "Red Brand" which is what I used for this particular piece gives both gauge sizes on the roll.

hi i like the design what kind of rings did u use and what size it looks like it was aluminum and 3/8. am i right or was it something else?

The rings used on this skirt were a high tensile 18 gauge galvanized steel with a high polish finish. I don't work with aluminum much because of the strenghth and cost. If the cutomer wants it I will, but I preffer not to.

You're welcome. It's a great design. Did you intened to have the front drape to the side? Or, is that just a camera angle?

The front drape actually angles to one side, she wanted to show more of one leg than the other.
