After Queen Chrysalis tried, and failed, to take over Equestria, fears ran high that anypony could merely be a changeling in disguise. and so Twilight Sparkle developed a spell that would force a transformation in any cloaked changeling. This lead to a period of almost constant paranoia leading to witch hunts. Ponies were accused, and sometimes attacked by there friends and neighbors when they acted strangely, eventually being dragged before Twilight herself to have the spell cast on them.

But the problem with a changelings mimicry, is that they mirror a pony perfectly, nobody could possibly see through their disguise because both their memories and habits are retained after the pony is replaced. So good in fact, that once Chrysalis was defeated, the changelings that had already infiltrated the rest of equestria, simply forgot what to do. Being a hive culture, they took their orders directly from chrysalis, and when she was removed from the equation, they didn't know what to do, most of them didn't even realize they were changelings.

So it was with much terror that Pokey Pierce stood before Twilight, and watched the flesh that he remembered having for a lifetime, burn away and be replaced by the the hard chitinous carapace of some alien creature he couldn't even recognize.
