To me this is a metaphor of dirty truth. People used to omit blemishes ,"undesirable" markings, bruises and what-not from paintings. This looks like an old paint portrait of the dirty truth of an unnamed household.

I love the eerie feeling to it, reminds me of those 17th or 18th century death books, only with a darker twist.
