Description

A new Final Fantasy celebration – starring Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth.

Part 14

Left alone awhile by his captor, Cloud struggles to free himself from the steel pole to which he is bound, wrists and ankles alike, by trying to stretch himself sufficiently far upwards to be able to lift the chain over the top of the pole and thus free his arms. However, it soon becomes clear that the upper bar is too high, that the chain is too short to lift over it; stretch as much as he might the manacles about his wrists impede the progress of the chain well before it can top the pole. But, that still leaves the chance of drawing it far enough to escape the end of the crossbar. With another deep breath and with his head forced hard back, Cloud stretches himself, seeking to free the chain – and himself with it. The strain in his body is painful, his breath ragged as he struggles at full stretch, the chain grating against the steel of the pole. And then, with a final effort, the chain slides free of its mounting! Cloud gasps with mingled effort and relief – and extends his fettered right arm as far as it will go. But that brings his left wrist up tight against the upright; he remains bound to the pole… All the same, his hopes have risen; now he will try to free the chain from its mounting on the left side – and that will give him enough slack, perhaps, to unloop it and free himself from the pole.

Craning back his neck, trying to gauge how much give there might be, again he stretches himself upwards, holding his body taut, raising himself as high on his feet as the ankle shackles will allow. He is so close now – so very close! If he can but work the chain from its mount on this side too…… Grimacing with effort, barely able to breathe, every muscle straining, Cloud makes a concerted effort and – yes! – the chain slips – and he is suddenly able to draw his arms apart! He has done it!

But he is not free. He has won more movement, is restrained less tightly – but he is still bound to the pole. Disappointment verging on despair washes over him. Could Sephiroth have calculated the chain length to such a nicety that the hope of freedom was teased to him, but yet remained impossible? Could he be so cruel? Cloud slides the chain to the left as far as it will go – but there is not enough slack to reach the end of the bar; again he tries, this time to the right – and with the same result. With a deep breath he raises himself up in a painful stretch and seeks once more to wrest a further fraction from the unyielding steel. But to no avail: the pole holds him still; a prisoner he remains……
