This is a Florida panther. Common other names are puma, mountain lion, cougar, etc., depending on region/location across the country and beyond. You can see the wiring/fencing was giving me trouble, as the large cat was napping in the far side of the enclosure, enjoying whatever shade there was. You can also see how large it is; just look at that face/paws! Such a gorgeous creature, though.
I'm putting these zoo photos as stock images, mainly because some are not great images by themselves. Feel free to use them as you see fit, but do not steal or repost them elsewhere.

Florida panthers are an endangered variant of the cougar (etc.) Nice photo.

You've coped with the wire problem very well here, Carolyn. If you get close then the wire is out of focus. Looking at the EXIF data I see you were using f/7.8. You could try an even wider aperture and that would make the out-of-focus region even more diffuse.

It took a steady hand and some layout figuring before I found a spot where the cat's face wasn't completely obstructed by the wiring, plus we already a few feet from the actual beginning of the encloser; but I will heed your advice and see how it goes next time!

I remember that in zoos, that you can't get that close to the fences.
