Thanks for the suggestion! Out of curiosity, what size leathers do you normally work with? I've seen smaller pieces of veg-tanned sold and I'm just not sure what to get. (Also, my tools arrived yesterday!)

Do you mean size as in thickness or size of leather piece? I like to use 6oz as far as thickness. It's pretty sturdy and you can get good depth but still have a nice flexibility. I usually am cheap and buy bellies. Bellies are good for small projects you can work around any imperfections. I'm wanting to buy a side or a double shoulder because I want to do a belt with a built in holster so I need a bigger piece to start with! Yay for tools! Out of curiosity, what all did you get?

I got a lot of the basic stuff. Awls and groovers and such.

I enjoy the color wash look of it! 'n the overall design is gorgeous.. As for photographing it, might try taking it outside in some shade.. natural light will probably show it off the best 'n in the shade wont be too much light..
As for rough edges, there are a few things you can do.. I've heard of people using a Dremel tool around the edges to smooth them up, 'n then sand paper for the tight spots, I've personally not done this yet, but I'm sure as I play around with my misc leather projects I'll eventually need to, lol. What I personally do is use the Gum Tragacanth ( [link] ) and the edge slicker ( [link] ) 'n possibly get a pretty flat bone creaser ( [link] ) for the tight areas (Something smooth edged to get in the tight spots with, I actually use a smooth spot on my cheap plastic ruler, lol)
I'm sure for the absolute best results, if you've got a very rough cut is to use sand paper/dremel tool then follow it up with the tragacanth, which gives a very smooth finish.. You apply the tragacanth before you stain the leather, 'n it shouldn't affect the stain any when you dye it.. It hasn't yet affected anything I've used it on, 'n I've done several belts with different shades of stain..
Hopefully something there helps! 'n hopefully I haven't doubled up on something someone else has already told you

Thank you SO much for all the feedback and information, it's very helpful. I've been meaning to invest in a dremel for various reasons, and this is just one more!

Tons of flaws... Another case of the artist seeing too many flaws in the work where any other onlooker will see any marvels.
Too light a color can only be realised by you, anybody else will think it's part of the design.
It's great work. I would be very proud to come up with such good stamping work.

Thank you. I'm not too much into carving as I think that it is the difficult part.

WOW. It looks like you actually carved it from wood, but (after reading the description) this is gorgous leatherwork. <3 The roses are lovely and well-detailed. The color must be stunning in real life, as it shows up pretty well in the photographs as well.

Ooh these are fantastic. It's great to see artisan works once in awhile, not too many on dA compared to Photographers and digital art workers.
Really nice work. Great display for them too!
