Description
December 19th,
"It's the last game before Christmas holidays, guys." Coach paced around the dressing room. His clipboard was tucked under his arm, and his ferociously clicked his blue ballpoint pen. When holidays began, there would be no practices and certainly no games for us Wildcats'. Beginning in January, playoffs started. This was the 'make-it or break-it' game for us.
"We can do this." Jerome piped up from across the room from me, leaning against his up-side-down hockey stick. His low voice was magnified in the quiet room.
"Yes we can." Coach continued, veering off his pre-game talk and worked on Jerome's message. "We can. We can have fun. We can win this, but only if you believe in yourself as a team."
I pulled my hair back while he talked and began to braid it, so it wouldn't get in my face in the middle of the game. I had to have my full attention focused on it, and not on some loose piece of hair snaking its way around through my helmet. Tying it with a ponytail, I then finished tying my skates. Samuel sat beside me, bouncing up and down, clearly excited and rather hyper. His hair was real long, shaggy and blonder than ever. It hung in his blue eyes, and was always plastered to his forehead after a hockey game.
"Alright, let's go. Don't forget to have fun!" Coach called as we made the sudden noise of standing up in our equipment. Hockey games at this level normally didn't involve much fun. Someone was always out to get another, if it being another hockey player, or an audience member, referee or coach. I followed Cole out of the dressing room. The sudden blast of cold air from the heated room to the rink didn't faze me, and hardly reached my bare skin. Just before stepping out onto the ice, I adjusted my helmet on my head, and snapped it into place.
The warm-ups flew by fast, and the refs called up the first string of players. Coach told me that Samuel and I would be playing. I took my position as the defensive right-wing, Sam took his as left. The puck was dropped, and the game began.
Half-way through the game, the score was in our favour. Coach was saying under his breath that he 'had high-hopes for us'. At that point, he sent me off for another round with the opposing team. Samuel was already out, sticking to his position on our side of the ice. The play was scrambling on the other side, so I took my time getting to my position. I fist-punched Samuel on the way by, then turned to watch the play.
Sam hovered in front of me, his eyes also keen on the puck. When Christopher James, one of the fastest skaters on the other team got a hold of the puck, Sam suddenly stopped, and sprayed snow with the blades of his skates. Christopher was within' feet of us in no time, ready to speed past our defense. Sam was ready, though, and swiped the puck from between his feet, and passed it to our center. He assisted our teammates, whom were still recovering, while I stayed back to help guard out net.
I was either distracted, or just completely missed him, but I was caught off-guard in the middle of nothing by something huge barreling into me. I feel backward, crashing into the ice. My head bounce heavily, and smashed into the thing above me. My eyes weirded out, glitching like a computer. The thing landed completely landed on me, but the weight was all directed towards my leg. The pain was excruciating. Something snapped, cracked, and shattered. I think it was my leg, but I couldn't be sure. My brain was suddenly filled with the pain, my teeth clenched and I half-screamed. In my right mind, I heard whistles being blown and yells and boos from the crowd.
"Get him off of her!" I also heard coach yell, and the thing was removed. The pain was less when it was gone, but it still swamped my vision. I almost couldn't breathe. Each time I drew a breath in, the pain seemed to worsen. People around me were screaming, phoning for help, yelling about the blood. I passed out before I could comprehend what was going on.
