Description Wellp. Here's the finished piece. Critique on the background would be epic. :3 I tried a few different things. Overall, about 80% proud. I really wanted to try some fun stuff with the water, but after staying up for far too long for me and doing laundry until 3 a.m. I think I'll call it done. I'm not motivated to go any further. XP

And a friend did a sketch of the same ref here: [link]

Enjoy!

pose of the horse is real nice and the background has a nice composition. But I would certainly use a different brush for the grass, it looks amature. Try to draw the gras strokes with with a single brush or find grass brushes with more diverity. Here on DA you can find great brushes.

Lol, yes, I've moved past that brush for sure by now. (This is REALLY old in the way I've progressed lately) however, your pointers are still taken in and I'll keep it in mind for the future. ;] Thank you!

do you use gimp?

sparkpaw In reply to rambler22 [2011-08-26 01:56:37 +0000 UTC]

Nope- I used to, and sometimes (Like the Kalak picture on my front page) I'll use it for certain affects that I know in GIMP more than I know in photoshop. (The Kalak picture; the yellow highlighting, and the background were all GIMP). But this piece in particular was entirely photoshop. :3

I love the pose!
And I think the bg is great ^^
you could take the reflection in the water of the mountains, blur and lower the opacity on them so that they look more like a reflection I think the grass is amazing also

THANK YOU!! Ya, the reflections I need to play with, but, I'm pretty happy with it all around. :3 Especially the grass- first custom brush I ever made. :3

Welcome
I'm still learning how to do reflections too. I found these helpful [link] [link] I didn't do every detail, or read every word, but it gave me the rough idea on what to do

I used my own grass brushes until I found these [link] THEY IS AMAZING!!!

AWESOME. thankies. ^_^ Though to be honest, once I get my hands on a tablet I'll be trying a more realistic style of reflections..... till then though, thanks!

And actually, I have an awesome set of grass brushes, but I really, REALLY want to grow more in all aspects of my art, especially since I'd love to make a comic once I am settled in with my skills or have more time. But thanks for the link too. ^__^

well, stuff like [link] is with a mouse (it looks more crtoonish), but my really good stuff like [link] is drawn with a pencil and then scanned in

sparkpaw In reply to ShapeShifter314 [2011-08-26 21:42:15 +0000 UTC]

Ya, I draw everything with pencil and scan it in. Except for rare things on iScribble or Muro or something. Then those are straight mouse. XD But like I said- you are really good with the mouse!! Especially your shading! I hate shading!! XDDD At least- on the comp I hate shading.

I've done it for so long now that I can shade a good one in about 15-30 minutes depending on how often I get interrupted :/

Mmm, lovely! Nice neat colouring on the horse.

The background... maybe you could include the grass's reflection too, in the same way you did with the distant mountains. Right now it sort of seems like that big area of grass on the right is kinda floating there, needs to have something connecting it with the water below. Perhaps a few tiny ripple lines round the edges too?

Also just a minor idea, but if you want the water reflecting the sky more, have the light area and then the dark clouds in there too. Looks a bit irregular with the real mountains being bathed in light and the water's reflection being all dark.

Well, hope that helps

Ah! Very helpful. You know- half of those crossed my mind when I was finishing up- but honestly, I was brain dead and the had no more voice to me than an ant does. -.- But ya, I'll see about working on it some more, including the things you mentioned. Thanks dear!
