Description
This is a fanfic series I’ve started about Sonic when he was a baby, and when he was being raised by his father. The story itself already takes up enough room so I’ll say nothing more.
Chapter 4: Please know that the night disturbances all happened over time on different days (not all in one night, 'cause that'd be crazy). "Herisson's dream" happened on the day of their time outside, too. Just for a personal happening, I began to cry when I wrote certain parts of this (at school). When I imagine it just right while I read, it can still happen... If there isn't one other person out there who doesn't get sad at Herisson's dream, it's probably just me. Sorry... This is the longest chapter so far. Such a nice father/son story.
Chapter 4: The beginning of the legend/night disturbances - Sonic: 4 years old
...
...There was an emitting fear one night…
Sonic was sitting up in bed, nudging his father's arm. He felt a little guilty to be disturbing him. "Daddy?" His voice trembled.
Herisson woke quickly, half-asleep. He was still lying in bed, turned away from him. "Wh... Wha iz it, son?"
"...I'm scared."
"Of what?"
"I dunno what it was... it was bad..." Sonic began to get more frightened until he shed tears...
Herisson realized what he'd been woken up for, and being so tired he didn't care about much else. "It was only a dream, Sonic. Go back to sleep please..."
He was disappointed but decided to obey. Sonic lay down, his head resting on the pillow. He pulled the sheets over his head and buried his face into his baby blanket. He was crying frightened tears seeing his father was the only one who could "protect" him.
His hard crying woke Herisson into enough consciousness to make him feel a little bad about his resolution. He turned and slid across the bed to snuggle up to his son.
Sonic tightly hugged him. "...It was so scary, Daddy..." Sonic whispered with a crying voice.
Herisson rubbed his head. "It's only a dream, son... it'll go away..."
Sonic and Herisson were out walking in the wood. Herisson was admiring its healthy beauty and peace and was glad to be with his boy...
“You know Sonic, when the cold season comes, we won’t be able to go outside all we want like this…”
There was no response from him. Sonic had been unexpectedly hiding in a tree that was looming over the path.
“Sonic?…Sonic!…So—UGH!” Sonic lept from his spot onto his unsuspecting father. Herisson had collapsed onto the ground and was lying motionless. Sonic sat on his back joyfully giggling until he noticed his response.
He got up and crouched down to his face, being a little concerned. “Daddy?”
“…”
Sonic gasped and nudged his head. “Daddy! Wake up!”
Herisson flashed an unseen smile. In an instant he sprang up and grabbed Sonic who was giggling once again.
Herisson joked with him. “You… don’t jump on me! Arrgh!” He tickled him in his arms and kept emitting shrieks of laughter. Sonic grunted and wriggled free of his grasp only to leap on top of him once again.
He sat on his chest. “My turn now!” Sonic attempted ot return his father’s action but didn’t perform it quite as well, although Herisson was already laughing hard for him.
He pushed his son off next to him and soon looked at his boy with an adventurous expression, but Sonic had been laughing too hard to notice. Herisson grabbed his son as he got up from the grass and set him on his feet. He started jogging in front of him while Sonic’s only playful instinct was to chase after him.
They were moving side by side down the path and his father gave him a big loving smile. “Follow me!”
Before Sonic could speak to him, their walk had turned into a run. Herisson continued to speed up and slow down to suit his son's reach.
They were both smiling and laughing at their happiest with the warm summer air blowing, and seeing almost nothing but blurs of green from the trees and grass. Neither of them became tired until much later that day.
…
…There was a horrible crash one night…
A crash that startled Herisson from his sleep. He dashed out of the room and downstairs where he found broken glass all over the kitchen floor.
Being woken from his sleep so late, he was in an unhappy mood. “Sonic the Hedgehog! What are you doing?!” He was sitting on the kitchen counter beneath the shelf that had fallen. Terrified from the accident himself (and his father’s anger), he was too frightened to respond.
“…Answer me!”
“…I’m thirsty.”
Herisson saw how worried he was and sighed. “Come here, son.”
Sonic carefully crawled across the counter to his father who was safely standing next to the kitchen floor. He held the little hedgehog in his arms and noticed his head bleeding a bit. They went to the bathroom, where he turned on the light, and set Sonic next to the sink where he put a rag under some warm, running water and laid it on his small cut. Most likely from hard sleepiness, they both were very quiet…
“…I’m sorry, Daddy…”
Herisson made a forgiving grin as he lifted the rag. “It’s alright, son…” He peeled and put a bandage on his head. “…I’d like it if you asked for a drink next time though.”
Sonic looked up, ashamed in agreement.
Herisson hugged him and kissed him on the head. They yawned. “I’ll get you a drink… Let’s clean up that mess in the morning…”
It was later that evening. Herisson walked back into the bathroom with a towel and shut off the running water. Sonic was happily splashing in the bathtub.
His father knelt beside him and began to scrub his face. “Gosh, you got filthy today.”
Sonic looked past the foamy soap and up at him humorously. “You got dirty, too!”
Herisson gave a loud laugh and scrubbed his arms. “I guess that’s what’s going to happen to us when we’re outside for so long.”
“Yep. All day…”
He washed his chest. “We had fun though, huh?”
“Yeah! You were running so fast!”
Herisson scoffed in modesty. “You weren’t going too slow either, my boy.”
Sonic felt proud of himself and splashed. “Am I going to get as fast as you, Daddy?”
He smiled and kept cleaning him. “I’m sure you will. All hedgehogs have innate speed.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means… we’re all born fast… naturally. Like a gift or or something… maybe.”
Being young, Sonic didn’t understand well.
He let the rest of his dirty self get scrubbed and rinsed. With this, Herisson had a rather difficult time as he playfully splashed around. Herisson got a little wet, but enjoyed listening to his boy’s childish laughing.
Herisson yawned and sighed. “After today you must be tired…”
Being so excited from the present day, Sonic didn’t want it to end. “No I’m not!”
His father rolled his eyes and chuckled as he lifted him out of the bathtub.
His son tried to persuade him. “…I’m not tired, Daddy.” Sonic was shivering as he shook his head.
Herisson wrapped him in the fluffy towel and knelt down to his height. “Well I know I’m tired… and if I’m tired you must be tired, too.”
Sonic was already yawning while Herisson dried him. He rubbed him all over until he muss up his fur and chuckled at how messy he looked.
Sonic came up and sleepily rest his head on his shoulder. “…I don’t…wanna go to bed…”
His daddy squeezed him. “Mmm... You're clean.”
Sonic was too drowsy to listen. He nearly fell asleep on his shoulder.
Herisson brushed his fur neatly back into place and quietly carried him to bed where he clothed Sonic with clean gloves and socks. Sonic really was tired from that day. He lay down in bed. His father pulled the sheets over his clean self and gave him his soft baby blankie. Sonic embraced it against his chest and nuzzled its very soft and fluffy texture. He closed his eyes and contently sighed.
Herisson smiled so proudly and had an immediate thought to himself. (“…My, he’s such an angel!…” ) He kissed his son’s tiny head and whispered. “Good night, Sonic… I love you…”
Sonic whispered even more quietly. “Nuh night, Daddy…”
Herisson walked back to the bathroom and observed his own body as his son’s voice came to mind. (“You got dirty, too!…” ) He closed the door behind him and chuckled to himself. Herisson removed his gloves and socks, and got clean as well.
…
…There were nothing but soft whispers in the dark one night…
“…Daddy…”
“… … …”
“…Daddy?”
“…Mmmm?”
“…Mmn...”
“Yeah?…”
“…I gotta go potty.”
“…”
“… Please?”
“…Mmmgff!… Okay.”
…
…There was something unexpected one other night…A dream?…
(They were slowly roaming through some lush grass, in the vivid sunlight…hand in hand. This place seemed so beautifully unreal to them but seemed to pay no heed.
Kati smiled at Herisson. She got closer, her nose gently touched his cheek, and she hummed in a sigh. He smiled and lovingly returned her affection with a light kiss in the same place. She giggled as they descended peacefully on the soft ground. Kati sweetly leaned against her husband and held his hands in hers.
From the warm sunlight, they became drowsy and she closed her eyes. “…You’re such a blessing to me, Herisson… wherever we are, I’ll always love you… I always will…”
Herisson’s heart was filled with every feeling of joy and love he could ever contain from her words. “I love you, darling…with all my heart…I will never leave you…”
They felt so safe and peaceful together as loving husband and wife. Herisson hugged her with tears in his eyes.
Kati’s lips touched his soft cheek. “… Please, don’t cry sweetie…” Their love could never be harmed by any hateful intention of the world… They would never be separated.)
Herisson was weeping. He was lying with his eyes shut tight, and feeling a bit of sudden anxiety, forgetting his son who was sleeping next to him.
He felt a light touch on his shoulder with a following whisper. "Daddy?"
Herisson didn't turn over to look at him. He wiped the tears from his face and tried his best to make an unsad voice. "...Yes son?"
Sonic sat up and seemed to be restless, but he was concerned about him. "...Why are you sad?"
Herisson sighed and couldn't stop his tears. "I was just dreaming."
Sonic cocked his head. "Was it a scary dream?"
"No... It was a wonderful dream..."
"Then why are you sad?"
Being Sonic's father, Herisson tried not to cry. He tried to be strong for him, and know it'd be strange and embarrassing if his young son saw his own father cry. Herisson sighed and got up, wishing he didn't have to say so much to him.
Sonic curiously looked up, a little worried, at his father who also sat up in bed. They had no need to turn a lamp on, as the calm moonlight brightly shone through the window. The light emitted certain contentment as it dimly lit the room. "It was a beautiful dream, Sonic... but... I'm sad because it will never come true..."
"...Huh...?"
"It was about... me, and ... your mother..." Herisson covered his mouth and turned his head slightly. He unleashed the sadness from his beautiful dream and was bitterly crying. He whispered. "...Kati, my wife, I... miss you so much!..."
Sonic wondered and also whispered to himself. "Mama...?" Sonic had been told by his father she was "gone," but never how or why. He never missed her as much as Herisson did, and never remembered her love.
He felt a small embrace from Sonic, who hugged him tight. Although Herisson greatly accepted his son's love offering, he couldn't smile...
"...It's just a dream, it'll go away..." Sonic had repeated his father's past advice, but also added to it: "...But what if it's a good dream? Is it gonna go away too?"
Herisson thought. "No..." He sniffed and wiped his tears away once again. "I'm sure it will always be remembered..." Herisson felt he couldn't possibly fall back asleep with such a sad heart.
He only kept hugging Sonic who was awake in his arms thinking. "...Did Mama love you a lot?"
"Mm hm, and I loved her a lot..." As their words specified, Herisson's dream was beginning to fade away in his own loving memories, and was feeling more of his Sonic's affection.
"...Did Mama love me?"
Herisson had memories at the question. He remembered how badly Kati had wanted a baby, and how much happier she became when she was pregnant. He sighed. "Sonic... She loved you very much... but... she can't be with us anymore, so I'll just love you twice as much..."
The more Sonic thought about his unknown mother, the more he also wished to see her.
Herisson finally smiled. "Mmm... I do love you so much, Sonic the Hedgehog..."
Sonic hugged him tighter. "I love you so much too, Daddy..."
Sonic felt well and smiled as they kept comforting one another that night. They got sleepy enough to fall asleep eventually...
