Oh my god, do you raise butterflies too?

No, not really. I'm a second grade teacher and for our life cycle unit we get teeny tiny caterpillars and watch them grow, form chrysalises, and emerge as butterflies. It's an amazing thing to watch! This spring will be my 6th year doing the lesson.

Awesome! I've been rasing butterflies ever since I was in elementary school. (in fact I've got an aquarium of 20 caterpillers right now) Its really fun. I raise Monarchs. What type of butterfly is this?

Oh wow!! How awesome!

This is a painted lady. We get them every year.

Tell me more about raising the Monarchs! Do you keep the cycle going (like the eggs hatch, the caterpillars grow, etc.) or do you let the butterflies go and order more? Do you have pictures??

I remember now! We had a bajillion painted ladies out by our apple trees a few years ago. Actually I don't order them, I have to hunt for the eggs and raise them until they are butterflies and let them go in June. Then they mate and lay more eggs. The batch I'm raising now will be flying to Mexico, and they're the ones that get tagged. Yes, I have pictures in my deviations and scraps, and one in my ID photo.

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask, what exactly do painted ladies eat?

In the kit we get from ordering them, it says to make sugar water.

I've found that just putting different fruits in the butterfly house is easier. They like oranges, apples, bananas mostly. They will eat peaches and pears, but not as much. Those are the only fruits I've tried.

As for in the wild, I'm not positive. I know the caterpillars eat plants in the mallow family.

It's more like a cage. It's round with netting so we can see them easily.

I'm not supposed to let them go. We're actually supposed to watch them die. For 2 reasons: It's part of the life cycle. And painted ladies aren't native to NC.

I sometimes let them go if I still have some around when school gets out for the summer.

Sad! I hate watching things die. They're native to MN, gosh, I remember when I was like, 12 or 13 I ran into the backyard and there were HUNDREDS flying around the fruit trees getting drunk off of rotten fruit. It was so cool.

I know! It's so sad! The past couple of years, most have still been alive at the end of the school year, so I let most of them go.

That must've been amazing!

It was so fun, I remember they would just land on me if I stood still long enough.

I wonder if they'll become a native species in time? We had our share of unnative bugs. The Japanese beetles came out of nowhere last year, and ate eing, thats why we sprayed poison this year. I'm cutting all of the milkweed in the front yard tomorrow, so the butterflies arn't tempted to lay eggs on them, or feed out of the flowers. The last thing I need is dead butterflies littering the ground.
