Some of you may know that I have colored this picture before, however only a small portion of it: the bottom panel of Lyon. Now that I can make my own lineart, I decided that I really wanted to bring this entire scene to life instead of just one measly panel.
Now, one may ask: why this scene? What exactly is the significance of Lyon patting Chelia on the head when she was sad?
Well, I've only gotten one piece of hate before, and it was on a picture of Lyon. I don't remember who it was, and I don't remember their exact words, but the gist of what they so eloquently wrote was: "Lyon is stupid and ugly, he hasn't changed a bit, you're disgusting."
I was shocked at this comment, not because of its toxicity, but because of who it was aimed towards. Lyon Vastia is my second favorite Fairy Tail character of all time, and I simply couldn't wrap my head around the fact that somebody disliked him enough to take the time to spam innocent art pages with hatred towards him.
Now I respect everyone's opinion. You're free to think whatever you want to; that's what it means to be human. HOWEVER. I do not respect people shoving their opinions where they were neither wanted nor asked for.
Unfortunately, I was too shy at the time to come up with a counterargument to the comment, and simply marked it as spam, wishing it away. However, I've changed, and I would like to take the time here to defend this deep and interesting character.
When we first meet Lyon Vastia, he didn't even call himself by his real name. "Reitei" was the first key to learning of Gray's past, of his travels with Ul, and her sacrifice. The earliest we know of Lyon is that he apparently sought Ul out because he wanted to be the strongest mage ever. He had heard stories of Ul and her power. He managed to find her, and asked her if he could become her apprentice.
Then Gray came along. Ul and Lyon rescued him from the rubble, and he joined the posse of ice mages. Nothing is known about Lyon's parents... Chances are they were not alive, as if they were, why in the world would they be letting their child run amok, searching for a superpowerful mage, and not even seeking him out when he joins said mage on her journeys for a year or so? And, it's Fairy Tail. AKA, there's about a 99% chance they're gone.
But anyways, on this adventure with his mentor and fellow apprentice, Lyon lived out a substantial portion of his childhood. It is clear from flashbacks in the manga, that the group grew exceedingly close, almost like a family. Ul treated her apprentices like her children (as Ultear was horrified to find), and Gray and Lyon acted like brothers.
As a kid, Lyon was always a little full of himself. He kept himself a level above Gray by calling himself the "older pupil," and even privately learned his own magic from some of Ul's books. He rebelliously used one-handed ice make, much to Ul's disdain.
Lyon was unconscious for the majority of Ul's sacrifice. As he didn't really see what happened, when he woke up he was confused and vengeful. Already (probably) an orphan, his second mother had also bit the dust, along with his dreams of surpassing her. He unfairly took his anger out on Gray, and told him it was his fault. Ul's sacrifice may have sealed Gray's darkness, but it seemed to have released Lyon's.
While Gray managed to move on and find a guild to call his new home, Lyon could not get his head out of the past. Little is known of what he did after Ul's death, for the most part, but it is clear that the next time he makes an appearance in Gray's life, he has changed very little.
On Galuna Island, Lyon is consumed with vengefulness. Power-hungry and obsessed with Ul, he was willing to melt the ice she had died for just to be able to defeat the demon she could not. Personally, I believe that a part of Lyon's mind was blackened with dark magic, perhaps taking hold of him when he was small, angry, and vulnerable. Either way, he is defeated by Gray with two-handed ice make, as opposed to Lyon's one-handed ice make. Gray tells him what Ul told Gray years ago... To find a guild, a family of his own.
In a way, Gray sealed Lyon's darkness that day. Ul was melted into the ocean, and Deliora was dissolved into dust. After this arc, Lyon (and company) join Lamia Scale, and Lyon gets his guild mark in the same place and color as Gray's, (perhaps out of respect for his former fellow apprentice, his brother).
In the Oracion Seis arc, we see Lyon interact in a guild environment for the first time. While he is no longer Reitei, he is still a bit stuck in his head. Pragmatic to a fault, he nearly chopped off Erza's arm instead of exploring other options to expel Cubelios's poison.
However, in this arc he begins to learn what it means to work as a team. Together, he and Gray defeated Racer, with Lyon finally using two-handed ice make like Ul taught him to. Lyon even sacrificed himself, jumping off of a cliff holding a human bomb, to save Gray the injury. Not only that, atop the mechanical unicorn Christina, he worked with the other members of Lamia Scale and Blue Pegasus to run the mechanism. He also sent a mental message to Gray, a plead for his brother to rise from the ashes and fight against the darkness. In this arc he is beginning to mend his relationship with Gray, and grow a closer level of trust with his guildmates.
After the events of Tenrou, however, Lyon lost Gray. He lost the last link to his past life, the one who sealed his darkness, his comrade and brother. For seven years, Lamia Scale helped what remained of Fairy Tail in their tireless search for their friends on Tenrou. When the Tenrou group is finally found, Lyon and Gray are reunited. It is clear that Lyon has grown up quite a bit in the past seven years.
As is showcased in the Grand Magic Games, Lyon has gained a faith in his comrades. He has a strong respect for Jura, treating the Wizard Saint as almost a surrogate father. Lyon is also quite close to a girl named Chelia. He seems to truly believe in the power of his guildmates. However, Lyon still has a hard time with working in groups. During his tag team battle with Yuka against Kagura and Milliana, he struggles. There is little cohesive power between his comrade and him, and he is nearly defeated before the time ran out. The same thing happens in the final battle, where he is teamed up with Chelia against Gray and Juvia. As Gray points out, he and Juvia were able to defeat Lyon and Chelia because the latter two lacked the teamwork that Gruvia showcased.
After the one year time skip, however, Lyon has grown even more. He successfully teams up with Lucy to help protect the city. And then, as is illustrated above, comforts Chelia as her good friend Wendy leaves.
Lyon, clearly, is an expert at loss. I believe that in this moment, he saw himself in Chelia, a powerful young mage who was losing the people she cared about most. He tells her that it's okay if she cries, in front of him. Essentially, he is there for her.

IS.
GROWTH.
Do you think Reitei would've reached out to a sad little girl, if it didn't involve some sort of personal gain? Of course not. Lyon's character has undergone massive development. He has been molded into a stronger, more stable, and even kind man. He has a family, and he has friends surrounding him. Lyon has overcome so much, and I have infinite respect for him. If you do not, that is your opinion. Just don't shove it down the throats of people who actually care about and understand him.
