Description

A type of creature from The Mound (1929), ghostwritten by H.P Lovecraft for Zealia Bishop. The story is about a race of people from the underground country of K'n-Yan.

They ride the Gyaa-yothn, described as "these great floundering white things, with black fur on their backs, a rudimentary horn in the centre of their foreheads, and an unmistakable trace of human or anthropoid blood in their flat-nosed, bulging-lipped faces." They are shockingly terrifying to look at. Their prints are described as: "not hooves, nor hands, nor feet, nor precisely paws—nor so large as to cause alarm on that account."

I'm surprised this story doesn't get more coverage. It's quite good, if you ignore the typical Lovecraft racism. It even has ties to the Cthulhu mythos. These creatures in particular are almost never depicted in art. I've only seen one drawing on the Internet, and it wasn't terribly accurate to the description. I wanted to rectify that. I'll also be doing some designs of the people of K'n-Yan themselves later.

This was done in ZBrush.

Pretty cool! I've drawn one recently too. Quite a different take though. There is indeed few arts covering tohse things so perhaps you'd like to see it. kingovrats.deviantart.com/art/…

I really like the veins visible on it's belly.
