Kind of looks like he's contemplating his life in captivity.
The animals in zoos must get seriously bored. Same thing day in and day out. I think that the zoos should give them distractions throughout the day to help stave off boredom.

They do to some extent; especially the great Apes. The most popular diversion I've seen given is food hidden in some sort of frozen block or artificial tree trunk. Orangutans and Gorillas have learned to use long sticks to fish out Catsup and Mayyonnaise from fake termite mounds.
Still, boredom is pretty common in all zoo animals, particularly HUMAN ANIMALS.
