The giant bearded macaque is a papionine Old World monkey found in the midwestern United States. Despite its name, it doesn’t actually belong in the Macaca genus. It evolved from a closely related lineage that migrated to North America through a land bridge, grew large sizes as a result of predator pressure and developing unique adaptations to cope with cold conditions.
To do this, it would lose the cartilages in its nasal bone and leave only nostrils to prevent frostbite, and would be covered by long and shaggy pelage for insulation.
Like most papionine monkeys, giant bearded macaques are social, living in a troop of led by a single dominant male.
Whenever food is scarce during winter, their last-resort efforts are winterberries. Winterberries are toxic to most animals, but luckily, their digestive enzymes are specialized enough to remove the toxins and extract nutrients.
