Description The scarlet stiltsieve is a tall semi-aquatic filter-feeding duopod from the open lakes of Jozu. It occupies a niche similar to flamingoes and giraffes in terms of lifestyle, feeding behavior and body build.
This is the largest of the stiltsieves, standing up to 2.3 meters (7 ft) at the shoulder and measuring 1.8 meters (5 ft) in length. Its neck alone is roughly the same size as its body length, measuring 1.9 meters (6 ft) long.
Like all stiltsieves, the scarlet stiltsieve lives in small unstable groups comprised of 20 individuals. What this small group consists of can vary from all females with their offspring, to all male, to any individual with any age or gender.
Although the stiltsieve may also occasionally browse on leaves, its main source of food consists of red algae covering the lake floor. Its proboscis is covered with bristle whiskers which are specialized for sieving the algae whilst feeding. The red algae also contains carotenoids which enables the stiltsieve’s characteristic red pigmentation to build up inside its white coat.
