Well, this has been in the works for some time and I've finally finished. And yes, let it be known that I am a Zelda fan. Can't get past the Deku Tree in OoT, but I like watching my brother play.

So this is for this contest [link] (which has some awesome entries if you want to check 'em out). I did this because I've been wanting to do something pertaining to Legend of Zelda and, well, there's a Wii thrown in the mix. I'd love to win that or the second place prize of Twilight Princess for my brother for his 20th birthday, which is fast approaching.

I was going to do something with one of the bosses in OoT, but realized that that might be a common subject and I sucked at drawing pretty much all of them, so I figured why not Link and his horse Epona? I'm decent at them there critters.

#6 in the 100 theme challenge [link]

Colored pencil and ink
Time: Meh, who cares? I'm done.

That's a great pic! One of my favorite parts in the game

although now I've beaten OoT a handful of times, I will admit, that when we first got the game I couldn't get past the Deku Tree either!! XD

Thank you. I've always loved this part in OoT.

The Deku Tree is really hard! I fell in a hole and couldn't get myself out. Navi kept yelling at me that the tree was dying, but I couldn't escape. It was terrible.

Yeah, Navi isn't good for hints lol.

And actually, it sounds like you got pretty close. You're supposed to get the the top, then jump down to break the spider webs and fall down that hole.
I'd have to go play to tell you the rest. It's been forever since I've played XD

I'll admit that I was trying to kill her more than the spiders.

Oh, it's been years since I've played it. I'm sure I could navigate it now (I actually got fairly far on Twilight Princess without assistance). Maybe I'll have to pick up the old controller and give it a go one of these days.

lol I eventually just stopped talking to her after a while.
I'm sure you could beat it if you picked it up again.
To this day, I despise the water temple! ><

Ugh, that thing was impossibly hard for my brother. And he almost didn't try to beat it because he was freaked out by going inside a fish.

Concrit time! XD (this is coming from someone who was obsessed with drawing horses when she was younger, and who obsessed about drawing people during high school XD)

Epona's body seems a little thick, her eyes are a bit low on her head. Link doesn't seem to actually be holding on; sure his hand is curled but we can't tell that any of her mane is in his hand or anything. Epona's tail seems to be flying back a little oddly. It kind of seems more like she's been frozen in midair than it seems like she's jumping over a high fence.

Link's face is okay, but it's sticking out too far; it needs to be pushed in a little. I love the expression on it though As far as accuracy to the game goes....his bangs aren't, but that's me being nitpicky

That said, I love the effort that clearly went into this. The woodgrain on the fence is just beautiful (this coming from someone who tends to skimp out on the woodgrain; I'm very impressed that you took the time with it). Often in color pencil drawings there will be scratchy areas that let slip the fact that an artist got lazy and just wants to finish up, but I'm seeing none of that in this drawing. The clouds aren't really arranged the way clouds usually are, but taken individually they're very pretty clouds ^^ Although the spikes on the fence look a bit uneven in places, they're still all lovely and seem to have been drawn with a lot of love and care to each individual one. The shading you've done in this picture is just beautiful.

I also really love it that you're drawing something different than what many people draw. There aren't that many that really think about this particular part of Ocarina of Time. (I hated that part to be honest; it's like you waste so many rupees trying to beat Ingo and get the darn horse, and when you finally win Ingo takes you prisoner? I was...rather ticked off at him...XD)

I also love the title of this; not only is Link escaping, but it's freedom for the horse as well. Sure she'll be at Link's beck and call for the rest of the game, but Link's probably a better master than Ingo was and certainly better than Ganondorf would've been.

Hats off to you despite its flaws, this is a dang good picture.

Thank you so much for the critique! I don't think I've ever gotten one so well-written before.

I agree with you very much about Epona's anatomy. I'm not sure why I struggled so much with her while doing this drawing, but in the end I kind of gave up and focused more on coloring. Horse anatomy is usually fairly easy for me, but I think this might have been my first time drawing a jumping horse, so her trunk area seems more than a bit squashed. I'm also not sure why I did her face that way, but again I think I had pretty much given up by that point in hopes that color would cover it up sufficiently.

This was also done back when I had very little experience drawing people, so practically everything about Link in this picture makes me cringe., especially his visible hand, which, as you pointed out, doesn't really seem to be holding on to anything.

And strangely, I think this was one of my favorite moments from the game (I never actually made it out of the damn tree, but I watched my brother beat the game so many times I lost count). I'm not sure why, but I always liked watching Link leap over the fence with Epona so they could ride off into the sunset and get screwed over by Zelda.

Also, thank you for mentioning the fence. I hated that fence. So very much. It was extremely difficult and time-consuming and gave back so very little for my effort. The clouds were about the same way. They were a rushed attempt at finishing the background, and ended up taking quite a bit more time than I'd hoped for minimal impact in return.

Again, thank you very much for the critique. Maybe I'll redo this picture in the future to see how far I've come along since then.

Ah, when I'm not gushing over a picture's good points or geeking out about the picture's content, I'm constructively criticizing everything Concrit is so much better than random THAT'S GREAT XD or DIS IS TERIBUL U STIIINNNKKK!!!!!!! I hate that sort of thing.... I much prefer concrit to either of the two extremes XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Spectrolite In reply to Flitter-Flutter [2009-11-01 20:18:06 +0000 UTC]

I most certainly understand. I'm terrible at giving constructive criticism, so I usually stay silent, and I am always really impressed when I come across people who can write a good critique.

Flitter-Flutter In reply to Spectrolite [2009-11-01 20:27:21 +0000 UTC]

It comes from having to crit other people's stories or have my own critiqued in creative writing class. Ahh, high school, how I miss it

You need to learn to give concrit! Concrit is one of the most useful things for artists, and when you criticize other people's works you end up finding shortcomings in your own as well, so it helps you as much as it helps other artists.

You can practice giving constructive criticism on my artwork if you want *shameful advertising XD*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Spectrolite In reply to Flitter-Flutter [2009-11-01 20:48:08 +0000 UTC]

It's something I do need to learn, though that means taking the time to do so. I've also done critique for writing (high school for me as well) and I was told that I gave some very helpful comments on ways to improve, but I freeze up when it comes to critiquing art.

Flitter-Flutter In reply to Spectrolite [2009-11-01 21:06:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh, just kind of think in terms of, what is the first thing you notice in the artwork? What draws your eyes first? Is it the center of interest--be it characters or some object or whatever the picture's supposed to be about, or is it something that shouldn't be attracting your attention so much? Are there enough shadows or does the picture appear flat and uninteresting? Where is the lightsource coming from; is it from the side or the top or the background? Does the light and shading follow where the light source is coming from? Is one eye too big or too small? Is the composition confusing? Does your eye stay at one particular spot for too long or does it roam around the picture without resting anywhere, or are you interested enough to move from one spot to the next and so on? Does anything in the drawing look shoddy or half-done compared with the rest of the picture? Is there enough contrast, or do the things in the picture blend into each other too much and become muddy? That sort of thing.

Thank you. I had so much trouble finding reference pictures for Epona, so she was more than a little difficult to finish. And the fence'e perspective isn't perfect, but I did do the whole ruler and angles thing. That took forever and a day.
