Presenting yet another in a series of Pony in Prison plays, "Mess: a play in one act."
[Opening: we see a drab, grey mess hall filled with parallel rows of institutional tables. Ponies are sitting in small groups, eating and talking in very low voices in a desultory fashion.]
Rarity: It's, ummm...very...green.
Gemstone: Vivid.
Rarity: Unnatural, even.
Gemstone: Artificial.
Rarity: You know, we can go around thinking up adjectives to describe the "slop du jour" all day, but at some point, we're going to have to (gulp) bite the bullet. So to speak.
Gemstone: It probably has vitamins in it. Or something.
Rarity: only if powdered lead and live insects are considered "vitamins" now. And...look, those two are fighting. Or drowning. Or trying to drown each other. I can't figure out which.
Gemstone: Rara, I think that's actually a pea.
Rarity: No, it's definitely a weevil. Peas don't move around as much. Or wave their little forelegs in the air and scream for someone to throw them a rope. Oh, down he goes. Do I need to organize a memorial service? I feel as if I need to do something for the poor dear, since drowning in such terrible food is an intolerable insult. At the very least I should post a sign that says something like, "Danger: Quicksoup," to warn others of the dangers they face.
Pinkie: It's not that bad. I mean, it's not a cupcake or even a muffin, but I've definitely eaten worse. It's bright, kind of cheery. I mean, as far as soup goes, this is okay. I'll eat it. It's pretty good. It's great, actually. Do you guys want yours?
Rarity: Pinkie....do you even know what it IS?
Pinkie: Sure I do! It's...well, I was gonna say "pea soup," but it's too sweet. Or gazpacho, because it's kind of cold but it's not sweet ENOUGH...it could be borscht because it IS cold and it's got that "beet" taste, you know, the one that's kind of earthy...
Gemstone: ...dirty, you mean?
Rarity: Yes, like feet, which is kind of how this smells. I'm definitely detecting the bouquet of Athlete's Hoof here, with a delicate soupcon of fresh barnyard earth and fermenting swill. Ahh, to be at Sweet Apple Acres right now. Does Sweet Apple Acres even EXIST in this world?
Gemstone [hissing]: Rarity, IXNAY on the parallel world thing, you never know who's listening here!
Rarity: Right. Sorry, dahling.
Pinkie: ...but it's completely the wrong color for borscht. [pause] You know, I don't actually know. Oh well. You guys want yours? I'll take it if you don't want it.
Rarity [staring]: Are you...are you aware that your spoon is dissolving?
Pinkie: Huh. [shrugs and eats spoon]. Mmmm, vitamins!
Rarity [hugging herself tightly and rocking back and forth slightly] Keep it together...just keep it together...just a little longer...
