Description I've been taking bellydance classes for the past few months (prior to that I had been teaching myself via books and DVDs), and I absolutely love it both as an artform and as exercise. The other day I discovered that my bellydance teacher has a website for herself under construction called "Moon Goddess Bellydance" and I found the title really inspiring. I have numerous sketches for graphics, like this one, as well as logos relating to it. I may actually show them to my teacher one of these days, but in the meantime they've provided me with an interesting personal assignment to get my creative juices flowing.

In this case, the circular form of a zil, or finger cymbal, cradles a lunar crescent.

The original is pen and ink which has been refined in Photoshop, and it is actually slightly smaller than the size at which it is being presented here.

I love the simple nature of this...and the little curl in her hair echos the moon theme very subtly and beautifully.

This is definately a departure from your usual style, but it is very lovely! This would definately make a great logo for a dance studio, something nice to put on tee-shirts for the students and stuff. i would definately share it with your teacher!

You're right, it is a bit of a departure from my general style. It's a little more cartoony and playful, perhaps?

I think it may be too detailed to work as an adequate logotype (I tend to think much more like an illustrator than a graphic designer), but it would look interesting on T-shirts, etc.

Its always fun to do something a bit different, isn't it? I'm sure if you look at my gallery you'd be hard pressed to even identify "a style"....I'm a bit of an ammalgam artist I suppose. And I know what you mean about thinking as an illustrator as opposed to a graphic designer....I've been having a bit of a time with that recently myself on one of my current projects. And when it counts...it can be a real pain in the arse.

Are you a good belly dancer?

I love this picture! Such a gypsy-ish feel to it

I have no idea if I'm any good yet. I know that I'm somewhat choreographically challenged, but I feel like I may have a knack for interpreting the music. I hope to one day be good at it.

Like what are some of the moves in belly dancing?

Well, bellydance isn't comprised of a specific set of steps like some other forms of dance, it tends to be more focused on muscular movements, especially in the pelvic and abdominal region. It involves a number of muscular isolations, for instance hip slides, chest slides, head slides, etc. and undulations, for instance belly rolls, body waves, etc. The various parts of the body are used to inscribe shapes in the air, for example figure eights and circles.

I'm no expert by any means, but I recommend "The Goddess Workout". A friend gave it to me and it is definately a work out, but the woman on the DVD gives a lot of history behind the dance and the moves, so it is interesting to watch as you dance along.
