Description OK, so- Just in time to celebrate 10K for the Trico drawing, have this lil gem!!

A few days back my boyfriend threw the concept of moomintroll [moomins] as an actual troll [hilda]! So- of course we started trying to figure out what the other Moomins characters would be as Hilda creatures :] -so far we have the moomin family as trolls, snufkin as wood folk [pictured above], little my as a vittra or a nisse, and stinky as a yule lad! still debating if sniff would be a lindwyrm or some other critter... if my fixation lasts, expect more hilda drawings on the way! ;D

Had a blast with the piece, and got it done within two days! which is quite exceptional for my standards ^^'

Process:
Firstly I started with a quick sketch of snufkin as woodman, referencing the myriad of images of him sitting down along the stream beside the moominhouse- after which i tried to incorporate moomin into the scene as well- and he ended up looking kind of unsure and searching, while snufkin could be explaining something or just looking off into the middle distance. The sketch itself didn't take too many passes, and I got it to a point I was comfortable with quite quickly!

After the sketch, unlike usually, I went in next with a quick color map under the sketch layer- trying to see what colors I should use for the foreground, midground and background to get them separate enough from each other without diverting from the show's palette too much. I referenced a bunch of official screenshots and eventually ended up color picking the best shades from a dusk-lit forest shot. [At this point I did realize that I couldn't make it daytime without poor moomintroll being turned to stone lmao]

With the draft done, I went in with the Linework tool on SAI2. After learning the ropes w/ an Owl House screenshot edit I did a while back, the process was done quite quickly compared to my regular lineart. In a few hours total I got both the background and the characters lined [after going back with a brush tool to add the texture to the Linework layer lines... whoops].
After that, it was just a matter of time to reference my previous color map and block out the flats. Then I messed with the shading- again shading on the same layer as the flats [never let me do that again istg] and some ambient lighting. I went in another time with another layer of shadows and highlights that unfortunately don't rly match the show's style to make the piece feel a bit more 'alive' and cinematic- but I'd like to think it was the right choice.

Just a few more tricks with the lineart to make it fit the foreground and background, and the piece was done!

Damn the trees were difficult to do tho, and I still don't quite get how the rock texturing works in the show lmao. Also noted a few quality changes between movie, and s1 and 2 screenshots. Pretty cool seeing how the show's style evolved along the seasons :] Can't wait for s3!
