The best tip I can give you is to place down flat colours first, then think of a lightsource and where shadows would fall on the object (opposite side to the lightsource)..then add in shadows (I use the lasso tools in photoshop) and my thinking when adding shadows is to keep them looking cool...even if they're impractical
