Description

"Had I not been looking close enough, she would have blended into the wall. Short and skeletal, she looked the every bit a ghost. She possessed a sallow, somber face ringed by lank, despairing curls of russet—but it was a peculiar shade of red, seemingly lacked the will to be vibrant, to gleam, to bounce like the perfect hair of her peers. But she had no chance of being like them.

Looking closer, I saw that it was as if the thick tangles (more of a tempest of hair, really) felt the sadness within the girl. Her full mouth was like a bead of blood welling up from a cadaver’s flesh. Her watery green eyes darted about in a disturbing way; looking, always looking about was she, as if the shadows might leap from someone’s feet or the very hounds of hell might come crawling up from under the floorboards and yank her to eternal brimstone. Her shoulders curled inward. Her hands had a habit of a trembling that never ceased. I knew she was cognizant, however, of the rumors that eddied round and round her head, of the biting taunts and scathing jeers that somehow or other slithered their way to the ghastly girl. She shivered, much like a tiny leaf waiting to be blown off the apex of a branch by a wayward gale.

There was no life within her. No joy. No hope. Only melancholy. She was a willing corpse.

And that’s what made my task all the more difficult.

The writing is a sort of idea I'm working on for a novella.
