I've played with that idea too. As much as I HATE Starlight, the mare does seem to have magic on par with Twilight and Sunset.

I like to think that Starlight got her idea of equality from Sunset's superiority complex and how horribly that went for her so decides that the only way to take away the negatives of superior ponies is to make them all the same.

I can see that, equalizing more and more ponies and the princesses one by one to the point that only she will be the only one that is special.
