One of the many pests that populate the Exotic Sector, Apthoroblattina is a massive grey cockroach. After several specimens stowed away aboard DinoCorp VII, being unintentionally removed from their native habitat and accidentally released upon the colony world of Paraterra, they invaded and took part in the Crater City Incident, which concluded with the nuking of Crater City and presumed eradication of the invasive insects, alongside the more serious dinosaurian threat.
Apthoroblattina are predominately grey in colouration, and lack complex markings or colour gradients. They possess a hardy exoskeleton to support their weight, and underneath this armour-coating, brilliant blue blood pulses throughout their massive bodies. Navigating their way around their environment with sensitive antennae and good eyesight, Apthoroblattina still succumb to predation from small dinosaurs, such as Coelophysus, pterosaurs, large invertebrates, and even others of their own species.
Armed with an excellent sense of smell and powerful mandibles, Apthoroblattina are able to process and consume almost anything, including live insects, rotten meat, dead plant matter, wood, paper, fabrics, and waste. Thus, certain individuals harbour numerous bacteria, which may cause illnesses in humans if touched or consumed. This versatile diet also allowed the giant cockroaches to spread throughout Crater City, leaving their usual dark, dirty abodes to spread into any building not occupied by humans or small insectivores.
Like Earth cockroaches, individual Apthoroblattina specimens are highly resilient and difficult to kill. These huge insects can perform the typical cockroach-associated gesture of surviving decapitation. If the head of the insect is cut-off, bit-off, or shed via various means, an Apthoroblattina is capable of surviving for a period of 1-3 weeks after the event occurred. In addition, they are immune to most diseases, capable of shedding limbs, and can withstand multiple shots from certain handguns.
Apthoroblattina do not possess a typical cockroach wing-structure, with the wings themselves reaching measurements of roughly two-thirds the length of the abdomen. While such anatomy may seem implausible for flight, Apthoroblattina accomplishes this feat by flying in a similar motion to bees. By rotating the wings back and forth, similar to a helicopter propeller, the large insect is able to achieve hovering flight at a moderate speed. The cockroaches often use this ability to escape threats and locate new habitats and food sources.
An extraordinary ability possessed by cockroaches, including those of FMM UV-32 genre, is their tolerance towards radiation. In the case of Apthoroblattina, they are able to resist particularly-high doses of radiation for short bursts. It is possible that a small population of Apthoroblattina, out of range from the initial nuclear explosion, not only survived, but continue to thrive within the desolated ruins of Crater City. However, no word from either DinoHunt Corp. or any Paraterran governments has been released.
Notes and Reality Check Apthoroblattina appeared in Angel Voices, a comic by FluffyYutyrannus and part of his now-disbanded Narrow Road project, serving as a direct sequel to the 2002 game Carnivores Cityscape and a stand-alone one-shot to the overall Narrow Road story.
