Description Justice is second-in-command of the virtues, executing her orders just as efficiently and stoically as you would expect. For her design, we went with two very unsympathetic creatures, a shark and a buzzard. The Shark is for their ruthless efficiency, a brutal killing machine. No toying like a cat or stalking like a wolf; just bam, dead, and then it continues on as though nothing happened. The Buzzard wings are meant to represent the kind of final justice death brings; from beggar to king, if you get lost in the desert you're nothing to a buzzard but a meal. The sword-feathers are double-edged to show how justice cuts to friend and foe alike, no consideration of compassion or familiarity; the pupil-less eyes also show this blindness of justice. The bronze skin refers back to the Bronze Age, where the first concepts of human justice were codified, usually "lex talionis" laws like Hammurabi's "Eye for an Eye". And finally, the balance-scale halo and the (modified) black judge's robes are classic symbols of the virtue.

Doesn't true judgment need mercy. After all one must judge the reasons and motivations behind one's crime before passing sentience, other wise the punishment may be unjustly harsh. Also evidence shows that pure punishment often leaves the accused angry and more likely to get into more problems, the best option is rehabilitation over simple punishment.

Besides if Justice only acts out of anger and a desire to punish, then it stops being Justice and turns into Wrath and revenge.

Seems a bit cold and harsh to be true justice. After all real justice must take inaccount all the facts of a case, like say man with a mental disorder kills five people does not deserve the same sentence as a sane man who kills five people because they were black.

And lets not forget the most important part of her design...: the Phoenix Wright pointer finger!!!!

Damn Justice,you scarey!
I don't know about anyone else, but Justice seems to be the most evil of the holy virtues.

Duh! Now I feel stupid. I forgot how to count yikes.
Hmmm, it looks like you've replaced the 'heavenly virtue' of Kindness with the Catholic 'Cardinal Virtue' of Justice, so that leaves us with Chastity to go against Lust. Well that's assuming that Pride is Justice's arch-enemy - I assume that because Pride would obviously see herself as being above justice, which would make Justice crazy angry (well if she ever really got angry).

Only two left to go: Charity to go against Greed and Temperance to go against Gluttony.
I love this concept, the fact that you guys have put so much attention to detail into the look and the reasons for that look of these characters is inspiring, you've really done you're research for this and I look forward to seeing more.

Three left to go, actually.

And thanks for the compliments. This has been a thoroughly fun project so far.

I have a lot of theories for this one. Justice is opposite to Corruption, which relates to Greed, but Envy leads to want and theivery. Which is more right?

I dont know which is scarier,Justice or Wrath.
Wrath is evil,but Justice...

Nicely done I'd say. She looks pretty...fierce?Sort of scary with those blank eyes.
Nice job on including the scale in a way, it looks magicky sort of.And the swords also have a nice shine to them.I also like the color of her hair, which seems sort of random to me, but it looks almost like sea-water(part of the shark theme?).There's also this certain definition with the character, especially with that vein on the shoulder and the abdominals.
Also, are you going with heel feet with all of the characters? It's a nice concept.

Her skin is bronze, and so her hair being green is a nod to the greenish color bronze becomes as it ages. Thanks for liking the heels, but no, not all of them have heeled feet.

Pride. Pride and Justice are the strongest of their respective sides.

Wait, i thought she was 2nd in command?
I figured Justice's opposite would be Wrath or maybe Greed.

Justice *is* the strongest Virtue- but she's not the leader.

sunflower-renegade In reply to TheSoylentOrange [2010-09-12 16:26:23 +0000 UTC]

That IS really appropriate, if I'm right. Like how Pride often asserts herself as the leader, Justice seems to take the position she feels is best for her and for the other Virtues- even if it's not superior to all others.

Interesting choice on a shark, i knew i liked it just from the thumb. However, as everyone said she does look a bit scary...more like a sin. I guess that is a good thing, like Daredevil

Aw, damn. I was really close.
The black and white gloves should have given it away, nice touch.
I like the bronze-tone, bronze-age idea too.

Interesting concept, although I'm not sure that justice is cold so much as calculating.
One who has been denied justice and has finally received it will see it as something both somber and beautiful.
(there's a difference between judgment and condemnation)

Your view here is definitively how someone with a guilty conscience would view her, but justice is primarily a function of balance;
The punishment must fit the crime. And once atoned, forgiveness is given.

I imagine that seeing an innocent being unjustly punished would piss her off just as much as seeing the guilty go free, and that's a great touch for the character.

Cool!
I'm looking forward to the next one.

I definitely see justice as col, because she doesn't care who you are or what you've done. You could be Mother Theresa and Justice wouldn't let you off the hook for an expired parking meter. Or you could be Dick Cheney and she'd side with you if you got pickpocketed. (She might have other words to say afterwards, but...)

The point is that justice protects the innocent as fiercely as she punishes the guilty. No compassion, no touchy-feely stuff, just a simple "Defend the innocent, punish the guilty" directive.

anotalenthack In reply to TheSoylentOrange [2010-03-01 23:56:04 +0000 UTC]

So she really IS Nemesis.

I think I see how you're designing her now. (Ironically, have you ever heard of the comic character called "the punisher"? That character's mythos has a few similarities here)

She's definitely a scary one, the dichotomy she represents is actually pretty interesting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TheSoylentOrange In reply to anotalenthack [2010-03-02 00:04:19 +0000 UTC]

The big difference with the punisher is that Justice only ever punishes someone *exactly* as much as they should be. The Punisher is an anti-hero because his dial is set to 10 for everyone, and everything. You're either good or you're dead. Justice is far more measured. Like, if she were to get ina fight with Pride or Wrath, she'd hit them a lot harder than she would sloth or gluttony because they're that much more evil. Justice innately knows how much is enough, down to the last cent or the last drop of blood, and will go *no* further even if it means whoever she's pounding on will get away. After all, even despite the Vices being what they are, Justice won't harm them for what they're *going* to do.

I know. That's what I was trying to say,sorry.

In certain newer versions of the punisher, that is how he is (I don't know the raw facts, but I'm good with mythos).

For instance, he ran into a supervillan called "the Rhino", and he put him in a wheelchair for a month rather than kill him. You see, the Rhino only ever killed one person in his whole life, and that was totally by accident. The punisher knew this and went easy on him (or at least his version of "easy").

I guess I'm just trying to come up with a good analogy, but the point is that I think I understand what you're trying to make this character.
Sorry for the confusion.

One scary looking Virtue while the rest are cute, one cute Sin while the rest are creepy. :3

Yesh, to make up for the cuteness and comparative innocence of Sally compared to the rest of the Sins, there's one Virtue that's disproportionately less cute then the others.

(...I find Devotion cute. I can't be the only one, right?)

There's no "balance" of anything going on- the girls are who they are.

(and no, I love her too, but her rage-crying makes me a little teary-eyed myself when I see it. )
