Description That night was perfect for rats to come out of hiding and devour whatever they had come into contact with. Rats, from what looked like came from all over the city, overflowing like a thick, black water, from this one drain at the side of a dark street. The moon shone bright, but was drowned out from the lights of the city, invisible to anyone that looked up. Though the darkness moved a sort of a darker black entity, gliding along the wet street. The figure started throwing heaps of uncooked meat at the rats, away from the sewer drain, and as he parted the rats like a sea, he slipped himself down and dropped into an even darker black sewer, the stench like nothing he had ever smelled before in his life. He pulled a flashlight out of his coat and looked around, and found just what he was expecting to find.

The ray of light shown upon a corpse of a man, dozens of rats and bugs, crawling all over him, in his open and decayed chest cavity, barely anything left of him as the animals start eating him away into nothing. Tossing another large piece of raw meat away from the body, the rats slowly start to uncover the body, and the man was able to kneel down next to it, and pull out a driver’s license.

“Joseph Sturling.” The man said through his black mask, the smiling face on the license resembled the decaying body only slightly, for almost all of his skin was eaten off. The man put the license back in his jacket pocket, and quickly made his way up and out of the sewer. He brought the bottom of his mask up and above his nose to give him a chance to breath and cough a little. But soon, he took out a cell phone and hit one number, quickly calling someone.

“Ranger… Yes, I’ve found him… In the sewer directly behind the elementary school… Oh, you’ll find it. It’s overrun with rats… All right. Yes…” He hung up, putting his phone back and walking off, lowering his mask once again.

The man in the black mask was Richard Desanto. He was a superhero, with no powers other then being smarter then most, more aware of the world. He was the first superhero of his team, and has seen more disturbing and gruesome scenes and people then anyone he had ever met. His team consisted of seven people. Himself, Haze.
Lance Tevas; Green Dusk.
Cody Loe; Dragonfly.
Elsa Burgo; White Gargoyle.
Neil Esch; Ranger.
Kurt Grosse; The Soldier.
Gordon Dustin; Vulture.

Each had joined Haze’s team of their own free will, watching his actions, and were willing to help him in his cause. The police were slowly loosing power because of laws restricting them from doing what they need to do, and so, these vigilantes break the law to bring justice to the ones who need it. No one has ever complained about these heroes’s, because they never messed up.

Though things, at times, can be a little much to handle. Haze, Richard Desanto, was slowly loosing touch with reality. All the years of heroing has taken its toll on his mindset, slowly depressing him into a hollow shell of a man, detached from humanity. The others worried for him greatly, but could do nothing, for he had no real emotional connection towards anyone, or anything any longer. No soul was pure enough to cleanse his. The only thing he did anymore was stay with his one friend, Neil Esch, of whom he was the only one he felt comfortable talking to. Richard owned Glans Morristown College, and Neil was a history professor that worked there.

“So your homework is to look over the notes and prepare for the test next week.” The teacher said, and was soon met with a wave of discouraged groans. Shrugging it off, he grabbed his books off his desk and placed them in his bag, watching his class poor out of the room, student by student. He was teaching his summer courses, there were very few of them, which made life so much easier on him and his duel identity as the superhero Ranger. But before the room had emptied, a single student approached him.

“Professor Esch.” The young boy said, “I’m not going to be here for next class. Can I retake the test some other day?”

“Yes, uh…” He pulled out a book from his bag, holding it close to his face to make sure the student did not see what he had written. “Ah, yes, can you come tomorrow at 8pm? I have no classes then, so it should be fine.”

“Yes sir, thanks.” The boy left quickly, and so did the Professor. He had very neat brown hair that was pushed to one side, and dark brown eyes. He wore an almost fancy suit, holding his jacket on his arm with his bag. As he left the classroom, he was about to lock up when someone snuck up behind him, causing him to spin around in self-defense, only to relax once more and turn back around.

“Richard, I’m not helping you.” He said, not looking up at the red haired man. His black eyes burned into his back.

“Neil, you’ve been helping me for years with this, why not now?” Richard seemed tired and worn, not very well.

“I help you when I need to.” Neil Esch turned around, standing eye to eye with Richard. “But not now. Either get a therapist, or get a girlfriend. You have no one to confide in, other then me, and lets just face it, I’m not always going to bet here for you. I don’t swing that way, in case you didn’t notice. I’ve a date with Cody.” He tried to push past Richard.
“Cody?” Richard looked extremely confused.

“Yeah, never would’ve guessed it myself, but, you can never tell the future.” Finally, he moved past Richard, and with one last, pitiful look: “Go see a therapist. Please? We don’t wanna loose you.” He meant their team, his only friends left.

Richard walked home, thinking hard on what his friend had told him. A therapist? What would a therapist be able to do for him? He would not be able to tell them what he had been through. He’s a superhero, and had a little something called a, secret identity. And did he say girlfriend? No. Just, no. He looked up from his daydreaming to realize he was walking past the house with the girl that sang and played piano. He smiled a bit, because hearing that music always made him cheer up a little, no matter what had been going on in his life.

“I’ll face it with a grin! I’m never giving in!” He heard that familiar voice sing from the open window of the red building. “O-on with the sho-ow!” He walked slower, unknowingly, and smiled. Suddenly, as soon as he walked past the front steps, the door opened and someone had walked out. He had never before seen the woman in the house, so he quickly looked up and stopped walking. But a split second later, when she had turned around and her eyes met his, while walking down the stairs, she had fallen, and with Richard’s quick reflexes, he caught her.

He stared down onto almost glowing brown hair, it’s softness brushed against his cheek as it fell down upon her shoulders, and she looked up, icy blue eyes met his black ones, and everything around him stopped. So this beautiful face belonged to the angelic voice that he loved so much? Her soft hands that rested against his arms were the ones that were so gifted.

“Thank you…” A soft voice shook him back into reality as he blinked, and then quickly let go of the girl in his arms as she backed up a step away from him. “I’m sorry… But thank you so much…” She looked a little scared of him for some reason.

“I- You’re welcome… Be more careful.” He didn’t mean to order her, but it just came out that way. With a nod of her head, she quickly walked away from him as fast as her legs could take her. It took him a minute to regain himself with what had just happen. “Did she just run from me…?” He noticed the scared look on her face he saw, and quickly walked home.

“Jesus…” As soon as he got to his small house, he looked in the mirror. His face looked horrible. Bags under his eyes, sleep deprived, miserable… And with the way he was looking at the Piano Girl, there was no wonder why she was scared. He gave a sorrowful sigh and sat down on his bed, hunched over and rubbing his face. He felt sick, miserable. Maybe Neil was right. They were loosing him…
