Only without the Death Note Light Yagami was himself. The rest of the time we watched the Death Note turned him into a Dragon. Kira was a fake personality, nurtured with the Death Note based on own vices of Yagami Light. The Death Note always tried to kill the owner-person, but the inner force of Light was too big to simply force him to commit suicide. But every step like Kira he was doing to his death, not to the New World. The Death Note didn’t belong to the world of people, and therefore became pure evil.
