Description I present to you, the North Western Railway’s number 35, Julie the Austerity Engine!

Julie was built in 1944 and sold to a colliery where she worked alongside several other engines. One of her jobs was to take the waste from the works in special trucks to a place they called “the tip.” Other jobs were shunting trucks of coal, slag and steel. Julie performed her duties well, until her colliery went defunct in 1967, and she was sent to Barry Scrapyard to rust. The austerity tank engine sat on her siding for eighteen years, until she was found by Sir Topham Hatt, who offered her a home on his railway. Julie really needed no convincing, and was loaded onto a lorry’s flatbed and sent to Barrow the next day.

However, the journey wasn’t without problems, as the lorry transporting her tipped over in Furness, which took more than an hour to clean up and gave poor Julie quite the battering. Eventually, she was placed back on the flatbed and arrived at Barrow-in-Furness, where she was place do on a goods train bound for Crovan’s Gate. When the train arrived, she was taken to the Steamworks, where she was placed on a siding next to an LMS Ivatt Mogul who appeared to be even more rusted over than her. As the two were checked over, Julie introduced herself to the Mogul, and scoffed when he introduced himself with only a number, which was 46440.

“Every engine needs a name,” she told him, “I’m an industrial, and I’ve had a name since I first came out of the works!”

While restoration work was carried out on them, one of the topics of discussion between them was where they had spent the last few years of their lives, which was when Julie was hit by inspiration.

”That’s it!” She shouted, startling 46440 and the workmen, “Your name will be Barry!”

“After the scrapyard where I spend twenty years rusting away in?!” 46440 said, taken aback.

“No, see, it’s a good name! It’ll always remind you of where you’ve come from, and how lucky you are to be here!”

46440 was about to retort, but paused, considering Julie’s words.

“You know, you do make a good point,” he admitted, “Very well, from now on, my name shall be ‘Barry.’”

Two years passed, and Julie’s overhaul was complete. Once she had passed her trials, and was given her industrial livery back, Julie was sent to the Kirk Ronan Branch Line, where she made quick friends with the line’s other residents, Emily, Molly, Neville, Hawin, Iris and Stafford.

Nowadays, Julie hauls slow goods trains to and from the various industries served by the branch line, which soon gained the moniker of “the Industrial Line.”
