The last "Darkly Dawns The Duck"-artwork for prompt 30, "Found", and it's another missing scene: Launchpad finds Drake in hospital after theΒ explosion of St. Canard Tower. Probably Drake phoned him. Who knows. However, what is rather significant about this scene is that it marks the first time Launchpad sees his hero without the mask. And poor Drake even tries to smile. He fell off St. Canard Tower after the explosion of the Waddlemeyer-Ramrod in the pilot episode of the show. This picture is supposed to depict the scene (that was never shown) in which LP finds DW in a hospital and Drake has to reveal his true identity to him.

I can't even begin to describe the emotions this hidden gem is giving me. So much amazement in this, and the answer to that question of "How?" is finally answered, at least for me. This is the possibility I choose to believe.Β

I actually never thought about that we never got to see how Darkwing revealed his real face and name to LP. And it makes sense that Darkwing must have done it on the hopital... It's either that or LP went back to the crash site to look for Darkwing in the faint hope of finding him alive, and unexpectantly stumbling upon an unconsious Drake there. Maybe with the mask torn off. The possibilities are endless~

I LOVE the way you've done LP in sillhouette here. Partly because it's just plain cool and partly because it leaves his expression to the imagination. Honestly, I'm not sure how he'd react to this, between his big-heart and motherish tendencies, his pedestal for DW, he relief at seeing him alive, etc. That's a lot of impact to work into a shadow, but by letting us see Drake and outlining Launchpad, I think you've managed it.

Thank you. I absolutely love how you can project so many different kinds of emotions on Drake's face - it's really perfect for that. So that's my "unmasking"-scene. But the possibilities to do this are endless...
I read a fanfiction a couple of days ago in which a bruised and tired DW unmasks himself in front of LP for the very first time and LP just goes "I have absolutely no idea who you are." DW retorts, "Well, I am Drake Mallard." And LP looks at him dumbly, "I still have NO idea who you are." That would have been something to draw.

Hnggggg I LOVE THIS! I know this is probably the slash fan in me talking, but even from a friendship aspect this just melts my heart β₯ Poor Drake is so hurt and exhausted, and has no one else to call but Launchpad and omg I just LOVE IT! The fact that he is trying to smile just makes it even cuter, but definitely can't help but feel bad for the poor guy. At least he will have a new family to help take care of him after all this 
(Also, I really think I need to write a story about this now. Jus sayin')

Oh man, I'm a total sucker vulnerable Drake β₯ especially when Launchpad is the only one he trust enough to show it to x3 And yes I would really love to base a story on this! As much as I enjoy shipping them, I've been looking for a good excuse to just do a sweet friendship story for them and this would be perfect for it Β and I would love to be able to include this picture with it! That motivates me even more to write it

On the surface it definitely seems like such a horrible match up, but Drake totally seems like the type who just needs someone like Launchpad in his life to balance him out, and I do love that

In this version I drew here, I imagined him waking up in the rubble of St. Canard Tower with serious injuries. He tears off his mask, cape and hat and is found - just another citizen that got hurt. He's then taken to a hospital from which he contacts LP. And that's it.

When in trouble, you call DW, but yeah, who does DW call when he's in trouble?
It's funny because he's all "I work ALOOOOOOOONE" but by the end of the pilot he's got a family, he chose to have it.
Feels, feels all around.
I always like your inking but for this one I have to mention how good the composition is. We see it from LP's point of view and we worry along with him.

I like to draw that side of DW - when he's defeated, exhausted, utterly alone. I'm cruel that way, I know.

Again, one of the most intriguing plotholes I found to be in the series: how did Launchpad find Darkwing? And at which point did Drake decide to entrust him with his secret? I like the atmosphere you created here, though. You can just hear Launchpad swallowing past the lump in his throat, fighting back tears. And Drake trying his best to play it down.

I guess Drake didn't have any other choice as to tell Launchpad about his secret identity. That's why he's probably got this look of defeat on his face here. He's just to weak and exhausted to care anymore.

I don't know what to say... this was truly incredible. I found it hard to breathe because your writing was so emotive and visceral that I had to stop in between, honestly. When DW falls (for what feels like ages) down to the ground, you can truly feel his desperation to hold on to something and his iron will to survive. Also, that he experiences real injuries - I like that. It's what I wanted to show in my art as well. He's truly hurt and needs time to come around again (in your story he died twice... if you don't need time to recover from that, I have no idea what else has to happen).
You write Launchpad so well - having him react in such a grown-up, serious manner makes him even more interesting as a character to me, because he is usually the goofy sidekick who isn't much more than comic relief in the show. Here he saves Drake's life, even displaying some quick thinking when it comes to getting rid of DW's costume. And your descriptions of his reactions to Drake's name, appearance and so on are simply put - perfect. With LP being such a huge DW-fan, he would react this way. It's only natural. Β
The only thing that had me wondering was the underwear...

*blush* Thank you; but as mentioned, your pics did help a lot. Yes, I had fun -sort of- writing Launchpad in a more adult manner here; considering what's a stake. Again, if someone hand-crafts a high-tech mini-jet complimenting their idol, it's only natural they would do anything to keep them safe.
The most difficult part here was to write Gosalyn; first I wanted to go the screaming/raging/crying route, but then decided on this, simply because in the series, she becomes so listless and quiet. It gives her grief and sadness, her feeling of loss and loneliness, a little more weight.
As for the underwear...well, there is that episode where Negaduck disguises himself as Darkwing, then strips out of the purple suit and stands there in his boxers...it's cartoon logic, just -go with it. Β Β

Found indeed - I have sometimes wondered about the moments we don't see in the series including moments from Darkly Dawns the Duck.Β It certainly feels like moments were edited out of the DVD releases I have copies of here.Β Laundpad is no stranger to working besides those who have secret identities.Β Still it is probably a bracing moment to a duck in costume like this.
I don't think anything like this ever quite happen to Gizmo Duck at least not I know of anyway.
