Description
~ Bill and Ben are tank engine twins who live at the China Claypits on Edward’s line. They were brought to Sodor in 1948, the same year they were built, their company was first established, and they needed someone to transport the clay on the newly formed Brendam Branch. For many years, they had worked there, being kept busy pushing and pulling truckloads of clay for engines and ships down at Brendam Docks.

The two have a reputation of being the most mischievous and troublesome engines on the Island. They like to have fun, playing tricks and jokes on the other engines and workmen whenever an opportunity presents itself, though it can get them into trouble. This has caused many engines to be on the lookout for those two, with very few engines like Edward and BoCo being able to keep them in line.

While they’re commonly seen working down at claypits, they have traveled up and down the lines of the North Western Railway on more than one occasion, once traveling all the way to Tidmouth just to listen to Percy’s stories. This became more prominent when the Fat Controller made a joint-ownership with the quarry master, becoming part of his fleet and allowing them to help elsewhere when needed. The most prominent act was when the Claypits had to be temporarily closed in 1971 due to bad flooding, causing them to work elsewhere (particularly Anopha Quarry). They returned to their usual line of work when the clay pits were reopened in 1983, along with newcomers Timothy and Marion, who they have worked with since.

Some of their most notable misadventures they got into over the years include their classic “swapping” places, confusing engines into thinking they were the same; just ask BoCo and Connor when they first met them. Other notable mischiefs included making Gordon, when he was switched onto the branch line, believe they were going to dump him into the sea, pretending he was a lot of old iron. Or teasing Thomas about his "Scrambled Egg" predicament, getting stuck in the 'drain,' painted blue, making up a story about a rainbow truck. We could be here all day at this rate!

But despite this, at the end of the day, they have proven they have a good heart deep down and are always willing to stand up to their friend when needed, like when they vouched for Derek to say despite others' protest, and especially to Edward when others are saying rude things about him.
