A long time ago, the site didn't exist,and I practiced drawing him mostly from memory.

Oh, okay the. You have a really sharp memory. I had to always look at a ref in order to draw a character.

That's a good start. Then,practice drawing them with out using a ref. You can add your own personal touches to them ; albeit small, with out de-railing the original look(s) of the character.
