Sketches of Tails in his original idea concept that Sega wanted. A racoon. AKA a Tanooki. But was changed to a fox, so that he doesn't look similar to other characters whom are racoons. EG... Mario,Sly Cooper, and Pocky.Related content

Now this's cool... I accuse Ranger Rick magazine of making me like cartoon raccoons and foxes, but that's another story for another time. I know I always liked playing as Tanooki Mario in SMB3... Tails looks great like this. <3

Maybe his design wasn't appealing enough to the japanese audience back then.But i kinda like the concept of tails as a racoon.Racoons could climb trees.With two tails,they make an excellent companion.OR a hat!

I really like raccoons. And its really interesting that Tails' original design was a raccoon.

Ether way, Tails looks cool almost whatever form he is! ^^ Mabey SEGA could create a raccoon companion for Tails? Hmm.. ideas ideas ideas...

I heard a rumor that Tails was created by a kid who sketched up a pic and sent it to Sega... Don't know if it's true or not...

it isn't the person who created Tails was Yasushi Yamaguchi. Though I've never found any sketches that he drew of Tails

That's pretty cute alright, though I have to mention every time it comes up that Tanooki aren't raccoons. They're actually related to wolves and dogs, and merely have a fur colour pattern similar to raccoons, with the mask and stripeytail.

Tails the Coon... nah, still wouldn't look right. While the idea of Miles Per Hour (his full real name as stated in the cartoon and Miles in Sonic 2) could of been a coon, we'll always see him as a fox.

Note: a tanuki (alt spelling) is not even a member of the raccoon family. It's a canid. And tanuki have two legendary traits, one of which might not exactly work in an E-rated game. Aside from being shape-shifters, they can inflate their scrotum to enormous size and bang on it like a drum. 
Maybe I'd better leave it at that.
