Sketch Version- [link]
CS = Character Sheet
Characters- Andrew, Mortia, Mari
From- My comic, the God Machine.
Media- Varied Pens on paper, Photoshop.

So I prolly owe you guys something this time around. So I throw the bone-

Andrew- Guy's best friend since 1st grade. Leader of the Gothic Society at their high school (Salem High). Is extremely wealthy. Chain smokes like a fiend.
Outfit that he's wearing in this is inspired by Rouge of the Cruxshadows ( [link] ), saw him in concert wearing this potato bag like thing (that was grey) and just fell in love with it. The hair was not inspired by Rouge (but he does sport it), but more of classic Punk and Gothic hair of the early 80's.

Mortia- Andrew's girlfriend. Part of the Gothic Society. Is our local whore. Stereotypical Goth who thinks she's not being trendy, but ends up being exactly that. Souless bitch.. wears kinky clothing to school. Rumour has it that Andrew has bought out the Principle to allow her to wear such things.

Mari- Guy's other best friend since 2nd grade. She's also best friends with Andrew, and is part of the Gothic Society, (she is the cordinator of the group.) Has a crush on Guy. Her parents are pretty wealthy (Mother is a lawyer, Father is a CEO of a book publishing company.) She is half African American, and half Indian (as in India, Indian.) She's an honest and true friend. Where there's Mari, there is usually a smile. ^_^ Speaking of Cruxshadows, that would be her favorite group (or place parody name in the future. ) Also her hair is based on an old character of mine, Brandy. Brandy was a Panda character, who had dredlock type hair, and had purple hair. She would sometimes have this hair style that Mari has. I always manage to sneak in bits of my past characters, into my new ones.

yeah i didn't watch 90210 either.. i'm so anti-pop culture.. cause most of pop culture is dumb. (not all, just a good 85% of it.)

I'm a pop culture junkie.

There's entertainment in it....not nessessarily the product itself, but in how people react to it. i get off on the obserdity of people dedicating their lives to the latest American Idol.

But think about it...pop culture is more then that as well. Video games? Pop culture. Anime? Pop culture (now-a-days). [Some] books? Pop culture. Cool 80's music? Pop culture.

I enjoy pop culture on the psychological level and a personal level. Sure, i hate boy bands as much as the next...and I'll probably never sit down and see an episode of 24....but I don't think one should discount it completely.

Ever think about getting into Semiotics? [link] (i learned about this intresting bit when it came to OKgo, the lead singer is all about bringing that into the music. If you watch their video "Get over it." you'll see alot of symbols for words, changing the meanings and such. [link] ) Intresting stuff.. course it transends popular culture, as it is a part of a cultural language that exists in cultures.

i said 80% did i not? means i just can't get into it without being disgusted. i'm not discounting it completely. but usually i want to throw tv. why do you think we never got cable again? I'm more into subculture things. I count anime as being apart of subculture cause the stuff i usually watch is from torrents. Video games.. well i don't like teh x-box that sits in the room, and i technically gave up on video games since teh Saturn died (is why the DS is perfect for me, it's special enough.) The music i tend to like is on a subculture level.. i can't turn on teh radio without being pissed off every song sounds teh same. (now if were lucky we'll here special programs, like the good jazz on UCFs radio station, and catch a song on WPRK that isn't whiney or such. That and real radio when they play good music you typically don't hear.) See i'm all about subculture. Indie films do it for me, I have rare chances that pop-movies appeal to me. It should be obvious what kind of pop movies are apealing to me.. last movie that appealed to me that wasn't Star Wars (this is part of teh pop-culture i do like, which some would argue as being subculture.. but it's hit bigger then cult status now, so those people can shove it.) was "The JAcket." I can't even recall if we did get to see anything else in the theater as of late.. think the incredibles was one of them.. but thats another thing i enjoy, animation. See what i'm saying.
The music you listen too isn't exactly pop, you are into a different scene that's not part of the mainstream culture. You can't turn on the radio (As in the radio in your car and such) and hear that off the bat.. a slight chance with WPRK.. but thats a subculture station..
Remember cool 80's music is still on a subculture level, the stuff tehy play at I-bar is considered Alternative, and wasn't in the main stream of pop-culture. It hits pockets of people, as it still does today. This ain't your Madonas and MJs.

etc. etc.

it's all about subculture man... subculture.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

iAmNerdgod In reply to SpookyChan [2005-06-15 16:24:42 +0000 UTC]

i like subculture. I'm not a culture hater.

But 80s music is pop culture. I CAN turn on the radio and hear Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, Hewey Lewis AND the News, Dexey's Midnight Runners, When in Roam, etc... When you see VH1 and MTV play them or reference them a lot..it's part of pop culture.

I define pop culture as either something played in the mainstream (songs you'd hear on the radio, on MTV or VH1, or in commercials, TV shows on the major networks, blockbuster movies with larger-than-average marketing campaigns) or something talked about/referenced a lot ("Where's the beef" lady, Superbowl commercials, "I've fallen and I can't get up", video games--past and present, OJ Simpson trial, actors, etc)....and sometimes simply those misc items that you just expect everyone to know in some way--such as I expect that I could mention Star Wars without someone saying "I've never heard of it"--I don't expect them to know, like, who the actor that played Luke Skywalker is...but they should know who Luke's father is.

My music tastest, true, is not pop culture--save my taste in 80s music (I never really got into the more underground 80s stuff just the popular hits I grew up with on the radio). Modest Mouse, I guess, you could hear on the radio...but that's really recent. I guess White Stripes too...but I believe they're still defined as "indie".

I usually define what I listen to as "just off mainstream"--meaning they might not be ON the radio, but they aren't too far from it either. My friend Guy, who is a DJ at WPRK, and I did a Christmas show together once...and it was a pain in the ass to get some of my choices played. I couldn't play Soul Coughing because he thought Mike Doughty sounded too mainstream. Keep in mind Soul Coughing (who only had 1 radio hit--"Circles") has some of the oddest songs--seeing how most of them were written through a drug trip--and most has a sort of Jazz spin to them, so I wouldn't call them mainstream at all.

Okay, that was a tangent. Anyways, to summize. I think you can make a case against some (or most) of MODERN pop culture...but pop culture includes a lot of stuff of the past (see: I Love the 70s, 80s, 90s, etc...).

i type too fast. thus why words like "liek","tehy" and "teh" come out the way they do. "teh dave" is mocking people who type like that. Or just having fun.. pick one. I never mean to do it.. one day i shall correct this.

I'm returning to this board with a few drinks downed, so I apologize if I come of wacky, yo. Anyways, that sucks about the "Teh". I thought it was some groovy inside joke you had with a clever background. In fact, you should just disregard the last couple of messages between you and I, Spook, and just pretend it is...um...that..woooo......yeah.

Uh-huh.....Love how the goths are wealthy....so technically they don't need to be depressed...hmmm.....and the "bad" goth is the one who dresses like a whore and isn't...really...goth....even though she's technically wearing the same trendy Hot Topic goth attire.

You know, Spook, I can definitely say this. Your character designs shine with originality. Andrew's legs seem a little stiff, but that could because they're so bulky, and this happens to be just a character layout. I would dig checking out some multiple angles with your characters in dynamic poses. When do you plan on printing this bad devil?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SpookyChan In reply to thecheesians [2005-06-15 00:37:56 +0000 UTC]

( i think Mortia would go above and beyound to get nothing from Hot Topic.. it's the way that she throws herself into the culture that she loses all meaning of what it's suposed to stand for, and comes off as an attention whore..and literally the whore. )

As for the rich thing, it's the neighborhood and area these people live in. Most come from well to do families. Just a case of the burbs. (this is how the kids can obtain drugs easily too..) I grew up in a ghettoish area and never saw drugs.. ever. When I moved to the suburbs I saw all these rich kids who did lots and lots of drugs.. I found it appualing.. but then again I was yet a lil straight as an arrow girl when i was a youngling. ... anyways!

Character sheets leave little room to be dynamic, especially when it's all on a size chart (which you'll get to see that in action at the end of this project.)
Also this is part of the process of getting materials ready to send out to publishers. So doing 54 characters, model sheets is quite a task as it is. I nee dto get a general idea of how they look standing up, and a few head shots per character ready so i can have a complete portfolio.. man is this alot of work.. :_:

I have another question. When you draw your characters, or...anything really, do you start out with pencil and then ink it, or what do you do? I usually start everything with pencil but I was just wondering what you did.
