Art Challenge 1, May 4th, 2009: We've all seen Tim Burton's "reimagining" of Planet of the Apes and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory- now let's see YOU "reimagine" something.Choose one creature from the following list and redesign it: minotaur, leprechaun, goblin, medusa, vampire, gargoyle, harpy, ghost.
Get as creative as you can!
Vampires were originally just despicable undead quite similar to zombies. Dracula turned the vampire into suave, handsome aristocrats. Anne Rice took that a step further, and Twilight took it a step even further.
I've always hated the sissies that vampires have become, and sought to return the vampire to its original "kind of like a zombie" undead self.
I spent two days alone playing with designs... did a bunch of studies on vampire bats, then realized I hate bat-monster vampires.
Aaaand then it hit me. Lampreys. I freaking HATE lampreys. They terrify the pants off of me, ever since we learned about them in college. So I made a horrible lamprey-zombie vampire.
Photoshop 7 and tiny little wacom tablet, 2.5 hours.

Kinda funny, I wrote a story involving vampires that lived in the ocean and they had lamprey like mouths as well. Very disturbing imagery to say the least.

That's one of the most original vampire designs I've seen. Vampires are getting a little bit too tamed, there need to be some more classic, blood-thirsty monsters to balance out all the romanticized pretty ones.

I really think you have outdone yourself this time. It really shows how much work you put into rendering this wonderful, awful monster. My hats off to you to your skill. Hopefully I'll see your name in the credits of a movie or a game under the conceptual art section.
