After the initial moments of adjusting to her age and the fact that his fathers saber Dawn was there, Rohain felt the gentle nudge of Crow and began to try and speak, but his mouth felt dry and stuck. though the woman was much older than the woman who saved him she had very similar eyes, face and smile.
"You must be Rohain, Dawn has told me a lot about you, and that must be little crow, ever courageous and brave for his tamer." Rohain let out a small breath, he patted Crow on the head with a smile, and nodded.
"Yes, I am Rohain, part of the elk tribe. this is Crow Scruff, my saber." the old woman smile, she placed her hand on Dawn and the sabor moved quietly towards Rohain chuffing at him like she did when she was just a kit.
"I am the Beast speaker, I help my tribe find beasts that are compatible with them, or I help the beasts when normal ears refuse to hear them. my name is bright moon, what counsel can I bring you?" she began to walk around the two asking several questions, most of which where directed at crow.
"you say you think this trip wasn't worth going out in the snow, you young man are too comfortable in your home." she tapped a grinning crow on the nose. "and you brought this creature with you, all because of some man, I heard he is the man who tried to have at one of our girls. you were right to bring crow." she laughed and went into her tent.
Crow began to prance around Dawn happy to see the older saber, she licked his head and the two butted heads softly speaking to each other of their travels. Rohain followed Bright Moon into her tent, she hummed and busied herself with herbs and food. "Beast speaker bright Moon?" he said softly. she only paused a moment then continued on counting mushrooms. "I want to know about your daughter, she saved my life five summers ago, but I haven't seen her since." the old woman paused, she gathered up the mushrooms and herbs throwing them into a pot of water. Rohain began to try and ask again but was shushed.
"My daughter was a wonderful girl, she had the gift, the bird, deer, and even the shy great cats, would speak to her. she had talent with fixing their wounds that hunters or others would give them. her name was Aurora, it was her sign at birth the brightest display of the lights came over me so many colors and shapes like all of the hunting grounds was celebrating her arrival. six winters ago food and herbs ran scarce, our winter camp then had been under the winters snow for too long before we arrived to gather our supplies. she went out one morning and she never came home. I didn't leave until the next winter hoping she would come home. the beasts told me her scent still rode the wind and that a few had seen her, I still ask the beasts but they are unsure of what they can tell me now."
"She healed my wounds from a saber attack, she made sure I didn't join the hunting grounds, I would have never made it home if not for her, I must find her." Rohain sighed "I, … Think about her a lot, I didn't know she was real or not so I never said anything to my father when the concern of finding a mate was brought up, I couldn't look at anyone else and not see her." "I, … love her" Rohain felt the words fall out of his mouth, words that until now had been his and his alone.
"over the winters I have heard stories of men and women being saved by a mysterious woman, but none of them have proof, none of them can describe her to me, why are you different? proclaim that you should have her and not one of the others. don't waste my time boy" she had gone from friendly to colder than the night in just a moment. Rohain felt a lump in his throat, but he also felt the pain in his leg, searing from anger. he proceeded to pull down his bottoms showing the scar that ran down from his hip to his leg. "she healed this, she has the eyes that look like glacier ice that dance in the moon light. she has the kindest hands I have ever felt, her voice is like a song sung by the gentlest of spirits, she has your smile and she gave me this." He took the totem off his neck and pulled his bottoms back up. "your tribes symbol is on the bear, I nearly fell over when I saw it on the poles near the entrance. please I want to find her, I need to find her." Rohain showed the bear carving to the Beast speaker. tears welled up in the cold blue eyes as an aged finger ran over the antler bone bear. she hugged Rohain and began to sob.
"you did see her, and I know where she is. oh my, the beasts couldn't tell me I see now why." Rohain looked at her confused, what did she mean. "She chose you to find her. I knew she had the gift but I didn't know she was already using it back then."
"I'm sorry what is going on?" Rohain asked.
"She is with the the god of the hunt, you must go through his trial to find her." She smiled and patted Rohain on the back. he spent the rest of the day being taught everything about Aurora and the god of the hunt, and his trial. by nightfall Crow and Dawn slept by the fire while Bright moon and Rohain continued to talk. "Once winter is over I will go to his lands and find her, I will bring her here to you as I promised." Bright moon held out her hand and placed the totem back into his hand. "Remember this and remember our promise."
