Description
Hikari was now lying on her back, staring at the blue sky. Not many clouds today. She thought. She rolled over onto her stomach, thinking about that day when she first met Kohaku. Who would ever had thought that her being take hostage would change her life so much- and for the better! Her small boat drifted on the sea as her mind drifted on memories.

Kohaku Hoshi…Hikari stared up at the captain of the ship. “Kohaku Hoshi…” She tested it out, not realizing she was speaking out loud. The captain’s head snapped toward Hikari. “Did you say something?” “K-K-Koh-Kohaku-san,” She started nervously.” “W-why am I here?” Kohaku stared at her, and just as she began to open her mouth to speak, Hikari continued, eyes staring down at her feet as she shuffled them nervously. “I-I don’t really think you’ll get much payment for me to be returned…” Hikari’s voice shook. I’m no good, even as a hostage! No one really wants me! But when she looked up cautiously she could have sworn she saw sympathy flicker across Kohaku’s face. Every part of her said this was a rude thing to do, but she tested it. “My parents care about their money much more then me…” She glanced up, and was sure this time! Her eyes had softened, even if just the slightest bit. But they recovered quickly, and the captain pointed at a door towards the north edge of the deck. “Go,” She ordered sternly. “You’ll be staying there.” Hikari nodded, and headed towards the door. But the girl she had been raised to be stopped her, and she turned back to face Kohaku. “I’m sorry, I will probably just be a burden. While you feed me, I don’t really have anything to give in return…” She bowed. What are you doing? Just leave like she said! Her mind screamed selfishly, caring only bout herself. But she fought it, the urge to be inpolite. Kohaku’s expression was still straight-faced, but a little…puzzled? Hikari tried to read it. Oh no! Maybe they didn’t plain to feed me! She straightened up with a jolt, and turned to her room, but paused when she heard the captain say “Don’t worry, we’ll both be fine.” Hikari turned her head slightly, but Kohaku was already walking away.
Hikari sat on the bench of her new “room”. That was really all it consisted of: A bench, a ceiling, and a floor. There was also a window, which was broken, stuck cracked open. She had continuously tried to close to but it would just pop back open, leaving all of Hikari’s attempts completely fruitless. Hikari shivered as an icy breeze blew threw the crack. IT was so late in fall; winter was just around the corner.
The bench wasn’t exactly as uncomfortable as expected; it would work as a bed. Looking out the window, she saw the moon was now up, and the cool night air was continuing to slip its way around her. She sneezed.
“Catching a cold?” Hikari jumped, startled, as Kohaku opened the door. “N-No, I’m fine.” She said politely, rubbing her nose to hold back another sneeze.
Kohaku stepped in and sat down next to Hikari. “How old are you, anyway?” Hikari looked down when she was asked the question. She just felt so nervous looking her in the eye! “I’m eight years old now.” Hikari could feel the girl’s eyes staring at her, studying her. She began to feel hot, as if they were burning into her skin, engraving themselves into her. “Since you know my name,” Kohaku started. “What’s yours?”
“I’m Hikari.” She turned her head to look at her, feeling just slightly more comfortable. Her big green eyes stared at Kohaku. “Hikari Taiyou.” Kohaku just nodded.
“You know my age…” Hikari started as Kohaku did, hoping she didn’t sound to weak. “What is yours?”
“I would think you would know you should never ask a woman her age.”
Hikari snapped her head back down, concentrating on tying and untying ribbons on her dress as she spoke. “But, you still look young…um…I-I though maybe 16?” She didn’t dare look up as she spoke. Rude! So rude! She scolded herself.
“17,” Kohaku said. “I’m 17.”
“Oh.” She wasn’t sure what to say. The room suddenly had this strange, awkward feeling to it. The air felt to warm and thick, and Hikari lost all comfort she may have been feeling. “What would make you think that?” The sudden question startled Hikari.
“I’m sorry Kohaku-san, but think what?”
“You said your pants didn’t care…” Oh. Hiakri felt liek a fool for being so disapointed. She is just worried about not getting any money. Hikari realized. But the next phrase surprised her. “Why wouldn’t they want such a sweet little girl?” Hikari’s eyes grew wide, and she comfortably answered the question, as if they were not strangers, but had known each other their entire lives. “Its because I’m a girl…” And so she began to tell her story. She had never talked so freely. She just said whatever came to mind. She didn’t mind the little respect she gave her parents, or about anything she said. She was no longer telling the story from her mind, but from her heart.
“That’s so stupid!” Kohaku stood up and slammed her hand against the wall. “Girls can do anything boys can! It doesn’t matter what the problem is- Gender, or your heart, or anything. It’s just a challenge! We’re not weak!” It seemed as if Kohaku was no longer even speaking to Hikari. Her eyes and words were right there, yet seemed so far away… “We can do whatever we want! We’re strong! So don’t believe them!” She screamed, finishing. Hikari knew she wasn’t mistaking the water on the edge of Kohaku’s eyes, wanting to force their way over.
Hikari was stunned and at a lack for words. “Um…Kohaku-san? A-Are you ok?” Kohaku took a deep breath and composed herself. She nodded. “Yes, I’m fine.” They sat in silence for what seemed like hours, but probably added up to only a minute. “Hey, Hikari?”
“Yes?”
“Would you like to bunk with me? I have some room.” Hikari smiled a huge smile, one she hadn’t been capable of for so long. “Yes!” You could hear the happiness flowing out of her voice. “Thank you so much!” She looked, and she was sure of it, and it made her more happy then she had ever been. There, in Kohaku’s eyes, was warmth, and it was aimed at her.
