Description
The Rashtrakuta Empire was founded in the 750s AD (by its greatest king Dantidurga) and spread rapidly. The name of the empire is derived from the ruling dynasty of the same name, which is not unusual in the oriental world viewed from Europe. On their way to power, they led numerous successful campaigns - until they controlled large parts of western and central India shortly before the beginning of the 800s.

They were great promoters of Hinduism, art and culture and maintained very good relations with the Arabs. They also profited greatly from the Silk Road and were thus able to take their slice of the pie in trade between west and east. Their most famous building is the Kailasa temple carved out of the rock in the Indian province of Maharashtra (one of the most incredible buildings I have ever seen).

The only thing that stood in the way of their success was their problems with each other. Similar to the Roman Empire, the Rashtrakuta constantly had problems with ursupators, who overthrew the established rulers from time to time. This led to a significant weakening towards the middle of the years 800 AD and their decline slowly set in before they once again led successful wars under King Mahipala in the 920s and advanced as far north as the Himalayas.

The empire remained the power of western India until the 970s AD, until it was defeated by the Paramara in 973 AD.
