Description
The saxons were also a very interesting people in late antiquity. Originally from the north of what is now Germany, they regularly raided the coasts of northern Gaul and especially Britain in the 380s AD. They did this so regularly that the southern section of the coast of Britain was also known as the Saxon coast. They apparently liked it there so much that they settled there permanently over the next 20 years. They did this together with their neighbors, the so-called Angles. This is why the British are still sometimes referred to as Anglo-Saxons. For Roman Britain, their seizure of power marked the beginning of the well-known "Dark Ages", although this refers more to the fact that there are hardly any written sources from this period. Over the next few centuries, the Anglo-Saxons dominated Britain until the appearance of the Normans in the Middle Ages (which we will look at later).

Not all Saxons joined the confederation with the Angles. A large part remained in the area and played a certain role in Northern European and German history over the next centuries.

The Saxons also often used the Sax named after them, which was actually a long knife.
