Qur'an (5:51) - "O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people."
Qur'an (5:80) - "You will see many of them befriending those who disbelieve; certainly evil is that which their souls have sent before for them, that Allah became displeased with them and in chastisement shall they abide."
Qur'an (3:118) - "O you who believe! do not take for intimate friends from among others than your own people, they do not fall short of inflicting loss upon you; they love what distresses you; vehement hatred has already appeared from out of their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater still; indeed, We have made the communications clear to you, if you will understand."
Is the girl a muslim? Or is she lying about her friendship with a nonmuslim?

YUSUFALI: O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guideth not a people unjust.
PICKTHAL: O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for friends. They are friends one to another. He among you who taketh them for friends is (one) of them. Lo! Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk.
SHAKIR: O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.
So bad translations are they? How come the three prominent translators (one of them a muslim convert - Pickthal) translate it the same way? The misunderstanding/mistranslation only works on people too lazy to do their homework. I follow a simple guidline if a muslim tells me some offensive verse is misunderstood or mistranslated, I do further research, because it is clear sign that I am on to something and they are trying to hide it.

Well ,It is a good thing to do further research ,because this might lead you closer to the right path .I respect you for that .
You'll have to know Arabic to be able to understand Quran .Since each word has a delicate meaning .
In Arabic the word صديق "sadeeq" means a friend .and حامي Hami ,نصير Naseer means protector .
The word ولي wali means "guardian, protector, custodian"
Try typing it in the google.translate . If you don't have Arabic keyboard ,these are the buttons ,gd to type ولي ,or you can copy it from my reply .
Oh and ,...I wonder if you have read the link I gave you ??

Actually I dont have to learn Arabic to understand Quran. If I did have to, than Islam would be ONLY for Arabs and nobody else. Nobody else would understand it and they wouldnt be able to learn arabic properly because if you cant translate properly than you cant learn a different language properly. Meaning, if you learned that language your understanding would be still wrong, so there would be no point in learning the language. What kind of idiotic god would make his message untranslatable language if he really wanted to spread it? (or made different languages at all).
The nontranslability is the one of the most common excuses muslims use to hide the faults, mistakes and the really embarrasing bits of the Quran. Under critical thinking it just doesnt hold up, you either have a universal religion or you dont, take your pick.

It's not untraslatable .But Arabic is a very "rich" language .
In order to translate a single word you might need few words from other languages to get the meaning right .
For example : You say "pray" to refer to "the actual movements of prayer" ,and to refer to "asking God verbally" .
In Arabic we have a different word for each of them . But when I want to talk about them in English ,I'll have to use the word "pray" as a replacement for both of them .
I'm an Arab ,and I gave you the exact meaning of the word mentioned in Quran, that as I told you wasn't translated properly .
God had praised Christians and Jews in his book ,usually referred to as "People of Scripture " ..Check the verse 199 of the 3rd chapter for example .
And since you seem that you forgot ,or ignored, to read the link I gave you ,I'll save you the effort and quote the part related to our subject :
"So many non-muslims take the following verse as their proof that the Qur'an forbids muslims to be friends with non-muslims:
"O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends : They are but friends to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily God guideth not a people unjust."
[the Qur-an - translation of verse 5:51]
In the verse, the arabic word أولياء "Awliya" is used. It is a plural and its singular is ولي "wali". The correct translation of the word "wali" is not "friend" but it is guardian, protector, patron, lord and master
in the Qur'an, the word 'wali' is used for God, such as
اللَّهُ وَلِيُّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُخْرِجُهُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ ۖ
"Allah is the wali (Protector or Lord and Master) of those who believe. He takes them out from the depths of darkness to light…"
[the Qur'an - translation of verse 2:257]
There are many other references in the Qur'an that give this meaning. The same word is also sometimes used in the Qur'an for human beings, such as
وَمَن قُتِلَ مَظْلُومًا فَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا لِوَلِيِّهِ سُلْطَانًا
"And whosoever is killed unjustly, We have granted his wali (next kin) the authority [to seek judgement or punishment in this case]…"
[The holy Qur'an - translation of 17:33]
The correct translation of the verse 5:51 is: "O you who believe! Do not take Jews and Christians as your patrons. They are patrons of their own people. He among you who will turn to them for patronage is one of them. Verily Allah guides not a people unjust."
the mistranslation of this verse is one of the causes of the misunderstanding here.
It is obvious that Jews patronize the Jews and Christians patronize the Christians, so why not Muslims patronize Muslims and support their own people. This verse is not telling us to be against Jews or Christians, but it is telling us that we should take care of our own people and we must support each other.
In a similar way, the Qur'an also tells Muslims that they should never patronize the non-Muslims against other Muslims. However, if some Muslims do wrong to some non-Muslims, it is Muslims' duty to help the non-Muslims and save them from oppression. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that he himself will defend the non-muslims living among Muslims to whom injustice is done by Muslims."
