Description GRAINY PAPER IS GRAINY. I looked eeeeverywhere and couldn't find any decent quality paper so i had to buy this shitty $4 sketchbook. Uber lame.

Butanyway, this is Audrey Hepburn. She is perfect.

This is great pencil work. Less can be more. I like the minimalist approach. It is more challenging to capture the essence of a face with fewer strokes.

Kind of like dancing a slow Rhumba takes great power and control, but looks effortless. The tiniest of mistakes is glaring. It is so much more difficult doing than a fast Samba, where mistakes are seldom noticed. Dress design is like that too.

I see you used "H, HB, 3B and 8B graphite pencils, HB and 2B mechanical pencils, kneadable eraser, pen eraser thingy, paper stumps, tissues." This is the way to do it to get high tonal qualities. I like to see multiple tones created Without overlaying strokes. Instead, I like to see it done as you did, by using different leads and techniques, and by varying the angle, pressure and speed of stoke.

Is the original larger? At this size, my eyes cannot see the tonal quality. I shall assume it is excellent.

When you say you edited in Photoshop, do you mean adjusting the scanned image to match the original, Or to actually change or add to the traditional work?

Have you looked at the program Corel PAINTER [link] ? It does an amazing job of mimicking oodles of different paper textures, canvas, even wood and wet watercolor paper.

The tools for Pencils, Oils, Acrylics, Pastels, Watercolor, Charcoal, etc, are pretty amazing too.

Yes, it is another learning curve, but for those interested in being able to do traditional type work digitally, it is the way to go, not Photoshop.

Something else that I find is really helpful to some artists is to do traditional work also, which helps in digital work. For example, being able to translate the real world of 3D, onto the 2D world of paper and canvas, can make a big difference in artistic ability. To feel how water color flows differently on dry paper and wet paper.

Learning how to adjust every stoke for light intensity and angle, affecting every tone, affecting every bit of shading and cast shadow. This is a mark of a master artist.

Have you ever seen Palette Painting (Knife Painting)? Here is an impressionism palette knife oil painting by Valery Rybakow [link] If you scroll down about halfway you will see a close-up section of the painting, showing the palette (knife) stokes of thick paint. Impressionism looks like wild chaos, but it is all about controlled chaos. These strokes of pain can be reproduced digitally. But to do so, it helps to do it, get the feel of it.

Sorry, I get carried away.

Thank you! Well I figured since this is my first traditional drawing in a few years I should stick to something simple.

I was really just experimenting with all those different tools. I haven't used them since high school and kinda forgot exactly how they worked together. After your comments I will assume I used them correctly

Yes the original is a lot larger. The paper is A4 and the scanned image is about 8x the size.

In Photoshop I just edited the contrast to match the original.

Yes, I love Corel! Have used it a few times. I prefer Photoshop purely for the fact that I like to make my own custom brushes and textures (not sure if you can do this in Corel?), and I know Photoshop a lot better because I've been using it for 7 or 8 years.

I actually did an oil painting class when I was younger and we did some palette knife paintings. It was a lot of fun but paint isn't really my thing. I think I'll stick to pencils and digital work for now.

Haha that's okay. Thanks for your comments, I appreciate it!

NOoOoO! Your scanner is great. Mine adds a bunch of extra random lines and dots and hides all my light shading, which will not come back no matter how much I adjust the contrast. RAWR. D:<

Laaaame D: Mine is a HP deskjet f2280. It prints, scans and photocopies and is only about $50. Not a great machine but it's hella cheap and better than having lines and stuff everywhere!

Yeah, not worth it.
