Description Like so many other places, the 20th century fundamentally changed Texas. Coming into the century it was a conservative, rural country of bilingual Rancheros and plantation owners. By 1940 the country had discovered oil, seen its industry and population explode and watched as both of its neighbours tore themselves apart in brutal civil wars with significant spillover and refugee arrivals. It was perhaps therefore not a surprise that its social system was strained to the absolute limit. The Texian Troubles put the country's future as a democratic and multicultural state seriously in doubt. Beset by Anglo-Texians who sought American annexation on one side and Hispano-Texians who desired a Hispanic-only Catholic corporatist state on the other, Texas' civil society rallied to its defence and won. Afro-Texians, a group marginalized after the abolitionism of slavery would prove some of the most vital to hold this civic alliance together and were finally given the rights and recognitions they had so long been unjustly denied. By the time the American-backed invasion was routed by Texian forces at La Harpe in 1951 the American generals themselves had increasingly come to realize that the Texas they had sought to conquer ten years ago was not a country that would ever aquiesce to American rule. The Texians had faced overwhelming odds and just like when they had fought of their would-be Mexican overlords so long ago, they had once again done the impossible.
