We've solved this problem some what. There is no volcanic activity but very long summer and winter seasons with varying amounts of light and temperature can affect things. The 'continents' in the jar form as giant islands of algae that form, grow, and sink back down overtime. The environment is dynamic but probably not as dynamic as a planet would be. There are also planned extinctions and times where new animals are added. After a long while in the last period (The Arthrozoic) things may become stagnant though. At that point we might opem the jar.
