It's been months. I have way too many sketches; I didn't even scan them all...there are just too many. Anyway, more to come. Sorry it's been so long. These things take time.Here's some Gulliver and HMS characters.

I love your rendition of Gulliver, seriously. And the Gulliver I've always pictured in my mind was based off the one in the illustrated edition for children I read millennia ago, and that Lemuel was, from what I can remember, a hottie through and through. But yours is better.

Illustrators had a field day with letting their imagination run wild, right? (Also, trousers with typically 20th century belt in the 1700s? Looooool nice try.) Only nowadays, looking after many years at my mythology for kids books that the pretty nymphs and Greek goddesses sported a somewhat suspicious likeness to 1970s pin-ups... A lot of history, both fiction (oh hi there War and peace) and non-fiction (oh hi there Die Bauern in der europΓ€ischen Geschichte). I tend to prefer non-fiction as of late, but then again, Tolstoy is pretty great at describing young hussars being emotional at military parades.

I'm reading the Ibis trilogy by Amitav Ghosh. Right now only two of the volumes have been published: Sea of Poppies and River of Smoke. The first, Sea of Poppies, takes place in India just before the outbreak of the first Opium War. We meet our characters, an incredibly diverse cast from all around the world, all with different dialects and jargon, all authentically represented. Ghosh also presents the characters objectively, so you, the reader, decide whether or not you like them based on their actions. He brings them alive with devotion to everyone's back stories and their lingo; it's incredible to house that many opposing opinions in one head.
The second, River of Smoke, takes place mostly in Canton, and I'm in the middle of it now.

Nichts so viele. Nur Italienisch, Englisch, Deutsch, und ein bisschen Russisch. And I'm more or less capable of reading French, at the condition I don't have to write it or - God forbid - speak it. (I should mention, though, I am reading that book in the Italian translation; I was too scatterbrained to look up if there exists an English one, guh.)
That sounds interesting. I'm positive I've seen the translated edition neatly piled at the bookstore, but I'd rather be a total language hipster and hunt down a copy of the original; especially if there's dialect and jargon at work, I don't want to miss that out.

Ach yes, the original English versions of Sea of Poppies and River of Smoke are essential. There are too many dialects and too much jargon to translate smoothly, and your English is impeccable, so you'll have no trouble with it. At least, not any more trouble than an English speaker would. The lascar tongue is supposed to be hard to understand, and the Eastern jargon one of the British officers speaks is supposed to be difficult; he's one of those characters who says a lot but the people comprehending him can only pick out one or two words. Don't worry; a lot of the characters are just as confused as the reader, especially since this is 19th century jargon, as well.

Sja, Russisch. Der Uni-Kurs war leider ziemlich schlecht, aber ich hoffe noch, dass ich spΓ€ter mal die Sprache wieder ins Leben rufen kann.

The guy with the donkey skin haha that threw me for a loop. It's Basil! Basilio is the character I based him off of and he has the donkey skin. Basil does not, though he has the same character design. I'm flattered that you remembered, though.
The guy with his hair tied back at the top is Lemuel Gulliver from Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels". An excellent read.

I mean something a little more serious. Something like downtown abbey or Sherlock Holmes. Your HMS is very fantasy based, but not the same English/European feel.

Right now the comic is entering its English feel, as we are following the knights. When we go back to their world, it's very Victorian. In fact, the conversion over into traditionally painted comics was partly to accommodate the Victorian feel. The comic gets very serious later on, almost to a point where keeping it funny will be a hassle. Pretty much all of these sketches are characters that will be appearing in the comic, so there is nothing to worry about as far as a European feel goes. With Rem and Jez, we get a different feel, as they're from a different world. With our villain, we get yet another feel.
But anyway, I AM doing a comic with these guys. ALL of these guys except for Gulliver, the Chinese lady from In The Mood For Love, and the live sketches of musical performers. That's why I was confused when you said I should do a comic with them because...I already am.
