That's how tiny the flowers would be, to be honest.

RIGHT?!? That movie is freaking adorable. And thank you! I'm so flattered you're using it as a background! I return to Gulliver's stories as often as I can; they're some of my favorites.

Love this, and all your Gulliver fanarts. You have a unique way of depicting him, and I really like it. Β It brings out his constant whistful sort of longing mood while still showing tons of expression. Please draw more!

Is this song meant to describe Gulliver or Rigoletto? Seems to fit Rigoletto. This is the side he never shows his daughter.

Can I say how much I love your character design for Lem? It's wonderful to see a auburn haired brown-eyed man, they seem to be rather rare in character design.

Oh, thanks so much! I do like giving my men brown eyes; you don't often see many protagonists with brown eyes. (Oh yes, this has nothing to do with the fact that I have brown eyes, totally unbiased mmhmm yes indeed). And the hair seemed to fit his personality.

AH YES whoops he'd be a little scruffier, wouldn't he? XD Very good point; as many times as I reread this book, there are some things that slip me.

And it would also explain why they compare his hairs to a boar's
That's why it's great having someone else reading and debating the details. The more eyes the better ;D

Thanks so much! True, true. There are SO many details in Swift's novel. He truly builds a world (or several). XD

On the contrary, I think he's extremely interesting. The difficulty with Gulliver is that he hides a lot of who he is through details and verbosity. He's an incredibly insecure character who's searching for the approval of authority figures, but every time he gets it, he pushes it aside like he doesn't deserve it. So he's in this constant battle of trying to find self value while at the same time allowing people to walk all over him (hence the scene in the third book where he licks the ground in the king's chambers).
He's also extremely self conscious of his body, which is why he goes into such disgusting detail about it. He reveals it because it terrifies him and makes him ashamed. He's also a man who doesn't really like to take things in and allow himself to become emotional about them. His understanding of the human body comes from a medical background, and he only has two children, a daughter and a son. Admittedly, he probably had the daughter first, and only had the son so he could pass on his legacy. He's not comfortable in his body and doesn't like to be naked, even with his wife. When in Brobdingnag, when he describes how disgusting the giants are, he realizes he was just this disgusting to the Lilliputians, and so it's like looking into a mirror and seeing all your clogged pores and dried sweat. His description of them is a form of self-loathing.
So there's a lot in him, but you have to get past all his hiding it from you. He's not an open personality, and he doesn't like to feel, so he distracts himself with details, and in turn, distracts you. So that you will not see him for who he is, because he hates himself.
Anyway, that's just my opinion of him. I always found him extremely identifiable.

I agree, his childhood was probably very interesting, I mean, he was the third of five sons. Being the middle child, he probably didn't get much attention. I can picture everyone else being rambunctious around him while he's off in the corner reading a book.
Gulliver is a brilliant man! I now am a lot more confident and able to hold my own opinion, but he reminds me a lot of who I used to be, so I understand him and I know he has the potential to stand up for himself. He just has to value himself first. And I agree, his interactions with his wife seem rather cold to me. And it feels like he just had children with her because that's what society was expecting of him.

Ah, that makes sense, and it's a good thing to remember.
I agree, his upbringing in that time period was not very nurturing, not in the way a child needs it. I assume he didn't have much time to play, nor was really encouraged to do so.
I agree totally. He doesn't feel like he belongs anywhere. In a lot of ways, one could read his behavior to be autistic, and this is the way he makes the most sense to me, because he's brilliant in many aspects and dull in others. But yes, his travels are very lonely. He never really connects with anyone, except maybe Glumdalclitch, but even then he becomes frustrated with her because she treats him like a pet.

A very good point. I've been trying to read up on 18th century doctors but the information is so hard to find. And yeah, depression could make sense as well. In any case, it's very clear he feels detached from people and very, very lonely, though unable to see that he is, and unable to see what could help.
