Description Lemuel Gulliver of Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. I figure the Lilliputian children would adore him, even if the adults aren't particularly fond of Gulliver.
Forgive my awful digital skills. It's not my forte.

Birvan In reply to squonkhunter [2014-05-04 00:06:40 +0000 UTC]

You can say that again XD

It's a pity Gulliver has such a "bland" personality though. It fits with the purpose of the book I guess, but still he's an extremely frustrating character at times
But then again that might just be my aversion to "sheep personalities" talking

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

squonkhunter In reply to Birvan [2014-05-04 00:56:23 +0000 UTC]

On the contrary, I think he's extremely interesting. The difficulty with Gulliver is that he hides a lot of who he is through details and verbosity. He's an incredibly insecure character who's searching for the approval of authority figures, but every time he gets it, he pushes it aside like he doesn't deserve it. So he's in this constant battle of trying to find self value while at the same time allowing people to walk all over him (hence the scene in the third book where he licks the ground in the king's chambers).
He's also extremely self conscious of his body, which is why he goes into such disgusting detail about it. He reveals it because it terrifies him and makes him ashamed. He's also a man who doesn't really like to take things in and allow himself to become emotional about them. His understanding of the human body comes from a medical background, and he only has two children, a daughter and a son. Admittedly, he probably had the daughter first, and only had the son so he could pass on his legacy. He's not comfortable in his body and doesn't like to be naked, even with his wife. When in Brobdingnag, when he describes how disgusting the giants are, he realizes he was just this disgusting to the Lilliputians, and so it's like looking into a mirror and seeing all your clogged pores and dried sweat. His description of them is a form of self-loathing.
So there's a lot in him, but you have to get past all his hiding it from you. He's not an open personality, and he doesn't like to feel, so he distracts himself with details, and in turn, distracts you. So that you will not see him for who he is, because he hates himself.
Anyway, that's just my opinion of him. I always found him extremely identifiable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to squonkhunter [2014-05-04 11:17:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know. It's almost like he never grew a proper conscience or sense of identity. Instead of using his brain and actually process the world around him to form an opinion, he just goes with the flow and blindly trusts authority
This really makes me wonder what his childhood was really like. The way he trusts clothes to give his sense of identity, being afraid of his own naked body and dirtiness in general (though apparently that is normal for the time period), his lack of any real attachment, even towards his wife (you'd think he'd miss her more often).... it sounds like there was very little nurtureΒ

I have a more rebellious personality and having my own opinion and identity is very important to me. That's why seeing him being led by the nose and blindly accepting it annoys me
Especially when knowing he actually has a bright mind when it comes to languages and maybe even a potential for mechanics (he did admire the lilliputians a lot in that aspect)

squonkhunter In reply to Birvan [2014-05-05 00:24:28 +0000 UTC]

I agree, his childhood was probably very interesting, I mean, he was the third of five sons. Being the middle child, he probably didn't get much attention. I can picture everyone else being rambunctious around him while he's off in the corner reading a book.

Gulliver is a brilliant man! I now am a lot more confident and able to hold my own opinion, but he reminds me a lot of who I used to be, so I understand him and I know he has the potential to stand up for himself. He just has to value himself first. And I agree, his interactions with his wife seem rather cold to me. And it feels like he just had children with her because that's what society was expecting of him.

Birvan In reply to squonkhunter [2014-05-08 23:09:32 +0000 UTC]

I'm not so sure. Gulliver clearly states that having him study medicine was a big financial investment for his father. And when the expenses were finally too great he did went his way to findΒ anΒ eminent London surgeon to be his masterΒ
To me this shows his father really cared about giving him a proper career to succeed in lifeΒ

I would more easily blame the type of education and english culture of that time *I don't know much about, but I do recall people back then viewing kids as miniature adults. Plus the british always had a tendency for the right and proper*
And the fact Gulliver really does seem like the quiet, studious and overly obedient type... > >

I think one of his biggest problems was he never really found a place where he felt he fit in. And in a time when mental problems were mostly unknown, or mistaken for paranormal stuff (he does show to believe in magic), he never had anyone but his own travels, aging and building experience to address the issue

squonkhunter In reply to Birvan [2014-05-29 19:42:10 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that makes sense, and it's a good thing to remember.

I agree, his upbringing in that time period was not very nurturing, not in the way a child needs it. I assume he didn't have much time to play, nor was really encouraged to do so.

I agree totally. He doesn't feel like he belongs anywhere. In a lot of ways, one could read his behavior to be autistic, and this is the way he makes the most sense to me, because he's brilliant in many aspects and dull in others. But yes, his travels are very lonely. He never really connects with anyone, except maybe Glumdalclitch, but even then he becomes frustrated with her because she treats him like a pet.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to squonkhunter [2014-05-29 19:57:34 +0000 UTC]

Another important thing to remember, that occurred to me recently, is that he is a doctor. And back then that was a pretty gruesome job, so he definitely needs to have the stomach for it

From what I can recall kids around 6 years old started to help out in the house and by the age of 12-14 they would start to learn a craft. Not so sure how that worked in a more urban setting, but it shouldn't be too different

I can't say much because I'm not into medicine, but personally I think he suffers more of depression. Not the suicidal type, but the one that makes you lonely, numb and detached from everyone

Yeah, she was a sweet kid, but it's true he was little more than a living doll thereΒ Β

squonkhunter In reply to Birvan [2014-06-04 20:56:07 +0000 UTC]

A very good point. I've been trying to read up on 18th century doctors but the information is so hard to find. And yeah, depression could make sense as well. In any case, it's very clear he feels detached from people and very, very lonely, though unable to see that he is, and unable to see what could help.
