Description OK, this took WAY more time than I wanted to spend on it, and time is not something I particularly have available just now, thanks to the (CENSORED BY KANG) people at college who decided it was a GREAT idea to make us do 6+ major projects, namely two mock History papers, two History Powerpoint Presentations, four pages of Maths Reading, and a six-page Physics paper over half-term (and you just know they'll say something like 'I hope you had a GOOD REST at half term, because we're going to pile on the pressure now'). Bah. It would have gone quicker, but I'm using PaintNET (the poor man's Photoshop - think MS Paint but with the ability to add layers and without the curved line feature, which I could have done with having). Plus, my computer has the charming habit of corrupting JPEGS:- not massively, but just enough to stop me from doing any sort of digital inking.

So basically, I I took a simple sketch < [link] > and, using a second layer, traced it onto the computer. That meant I could quickly and easily colour it. If I actually get a) the time and b) the motivation to continue with this, I'll add some better shading, but until then I never want to have to do anything else on this picture. I completed about 75% of it in two hours in a frenzy of activity, then made the mistake of saving it in JPEG form. Nuh-uh. Suddenly, the pristine white between the black lines is speckled with very slightly off-white squares, making my 'fill' utility about as useful as a chocolate teapot. But it's finished now.

Thanks for your comment. I really didn't think it had come out all that well when I first put it up, but it's grown on me. I'm thinking of doing a shaded version, but I'm a bit short of time at the minute.

Thats pretty darn good for using a program like ms paint or photoshop.

Did you use a tablet or was it the mouse you used?

Just the mouse - I'm not very good with the tablet yet. I traced on the second layer over my original drawing. If you look close enough, you'll note there aren't actually any curved lines except for the circles: that's because PaintNET doesn't support them, unlike MS Paint. In retrospect, I could have made the edges smoother by using part of a circle, but that'll have to wait until I do another sketch I can be bothered to digitise... Anyway, thanks for your comment!

Thanks for your kind words I think I'm beginning to warm to this pic now I've left it for a while. I was probably frustrated after having to restart. I'm going to have to look into Photoshop... or at least try and find something a bit better in terms of freeware than PaintNET. I was having to re-do the same part of the picture over and over again after realising I was drawing on the original picture and not the tracing layer.

yeah it sucks when you realise you've just slaped paint over the line work. dont give up on digital art just yet.

Thanks for your comment. Would you mind clarifying, though, for the future - is it 'messy' just in terms of the linework, or because it's been compressed? It does look better in full-view, because I didn't provide a preview, and it was in fairly high resolution...

I was referring to the abundance of lines within the actual clothes, which really detriment the overall look. (It does look 'messy' from afar) I'm not talking about the folds on the clothing, those are fine, it's just those miscellaneous little lines within the actual clothing.

That's just my take on it. ^^
