back in the medieval times doctors coated these leather-beaks with herbs and swine fat. They believed that these rejects the foul air from being breathed in by the doctors. You can say it was like the first idea of a gas-mask. However it was ineffective regarding the medical technology was like not existend at that time. Thats what happens when you dump your feces and trash right on the street. They had no sewers or trash facilities back then. Also that foul stench that occured from that didnt caused the plague. Originally it was Fleas which sat on the fur of rats. And these rats lived in paradise back then in the streets and houses. When the fleas jumped on humans and bit them, that was the true cause of the infection. Hence, these plague doctor masks were useless since it was not the stench that infects you. Many doctors died weeks later from the same disease after treating their plague patients. At 1353 it was the most spreaded disease in all of europe. Arround 250 Million people died from it. The disease is still existend in poor countries like india or south-africa.

XD did not expect a huge lecture but It was interesting. My school did skip the interesting part about most of time eras. It was Grece mytology, Religion in Europe for most of the time and Crusaders war with Poland... Religion stuff mostly but nothing really interesting... You have better History XD
