Description volo lacerta
(speed lizard)

flying Reptile
length: 50-60 ft (18.5 m)
weight: 30-45 lbs
height: 20 ft (6 m)
Life Span: 45-50 years

can be found anywhere except the northern and southern poles.

equipped with eight methane-powered "jet" pods, four on each side of the body under each wing, that can generate speeds up to 200 mph.

Wings do not flap, used only to stabilize the creature when flying at high speeds.
Act more like a giant hollow fins.

no eyes, use echolocation

Never land, they eat and sleep on the wing. They can't stop moving forward or else they would fall.

Carnivores - will snap at anything that moves, if they can they will swallow it whole.
For larger prey they will chase it down with their speed then spear it with their neurtoxin barbed tongues that are stored in the roofs of their hide-covered beaks. When the creature finally dies of poisoning it will pick it up with it's hind legs (if it's not too heavy) and chow down. They are messy eaters and are known to leave trails of torn flesh, whole body parts and blood.

life:
To lay eggs a female will fly close to the ground at speeds of 50 mph. She will then disperse hundreds of light, airy eggs like seeds. The eggs have built in parachutes that will soften the landing, then a hard flap at the bottom of the egg will attempt to bury it. If this isn't enough protection the parachutes will also melt and create a goopy, foul-smelling mesh around the egg. This wards off most predators. Within a month a small volo lacerta (only about 8 ounces) will dig it's way out of the shallow hole. At this stage their poisoned tongues are well developed but their jets are not. It will take 5 years before it can fly. Until then it will run about eating incests and fleeing larger predators. This is the only time a volo lacerta will walk, for when it fully matures it's legs will not be able to support it's full weight. Once matured the volo lacerta will take off to the skies, to never return to the ground again. It will then search for other young volo lacerta to form a pack (normally has about 3-6 members). ounce they reach the age of 15 the pack will split and search for mates.
Volo lacerta over the age of 15 live solitary, only meeting other volo lacerta to mate or fight.

Personality: highly aggressive and territorial. Can't be tamed, even if raised from birth.

Coloration: ANY color, ANY pattern : D normally similar to their parents.

Their is no differences in appearance for males and females.

you are free to make one if you wish : D just fallow these rules and credit me!!

Very interesting idea! How do they sleep in flight?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ssleepy In reply to Rakaseth [2010-10-10 02:17:55 +0000 UTC]

same way a sooty tern does (another animal known for flying and sleeping X3) They fly high enough and fast enough to keep from crashing and only half the brain actually 'sleeps' at a time.

Can they hover?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ssleepy In reply to amymist [2010-10-08 00:22:35 +0000 UTC]

no, they must always be moving forward or else they'd loose momentum and crash :3

Kinda like sharks. They can't stop swimming or they won't get water through their gills and (sorta) drown. XD

lol the thought of a fish drowning XD

these are cool O: fancy doing a collab between your species and my keksi N'Yoka? :3

they're both territorial creatures so they'd more then likely clash >D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ssleepy In reply to RhinocerosGuts [2010-08-25 02:39:51 +0000 UTC]

sure!! : D
though I've never actually done a collab~
but it sounds fun anyways XD

RhinocerosGuts In reply to ssleepy [2010-08-25 02:41:01 +0000 UTC]

haha, I've only ever done 1 collab lul.
do you want me to do my side first?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ssleepy In reply to RhinocerosGuts [2010-08-25 02:51:47 +0000 UTC]

if you want too :3
though if you want me to do the lineart that's fine too!
I actually have this neat idea of a pact of three young volo lacerta straying into the territory of a large Kekshi N'Yoka. Being young and inexperienced the volo lacerta curiously swarm around the Kekshi N'Yoka until it decides to take a chomp out of one of them XD

though on the other hand I would also love to color~ I'd get to design the creatures then XD

so either way I don't care XD

Tawadi [2010-08-25 02:11:55 +0000 UTC]

Interesting creature, but whats the point of putting legs on a creature that doesnt land?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ssleepy In reply to Tawadi [2010-08-25 02:24:28 +0000 UTC]

they use their legs when their first born to walk,
then when their older and start flying to carry their meals. C:
they can also be used for balance,
so that the jets don't cause the creature to spin out of control.

I hope that makes sense!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Tawadi In reply to ssleepy [2010-08-25 03:19:16 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yes, of course, didnt even think about the young. Though the way you described it I assumed their prey was small enough to be eaten quickly, like small birds that can be snapped up at will. Do they land to reproduce or do they just drop eggs/live young and hope for the best?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ssleepy In reply to Tawadi [2010-08-25 03:52:20 +0000 UTC]

they prefer small prey but in desperate times they can hunt prey as large as horses and small whales C:

to lay eggs a female will fly low over the ground and disperse her eggs like seeds. The eggs have built in parachutes that will soften the landing, then a hard flap at the bottom of the egg will attempt to bury it. If this isn't enough protection the parachutes will also melt and create a goopy, foul-smelling mesh around the egg. This wards off most predators.

there is also some luck involved, if the eggs fall in water or land on a rock or in a tree and can't bury themselves they could be in danger.
