Description Here's the guy who made the rather unremarkable "Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs" something to watch for me.  Was it the same for you?  Since they've unwisely nixed him from the franchise, I feel he deserves some fan art.  Just doing this one piece, I can understand how it is that animators love him (what a great design from Peter DeSeve!), and Simon Pegg's wonderful performance seals the deal.  Yeah, probably doing more of this guy.

(Special thanks to , from whom I stole the background technique.

(Stay tuned to the sketchbook to see some of what I went through just to come up with a pose.)

Wow, that looks very good. I love your colouring style.

But yeah, it's a shame how they now seem to act as if he was never an important character. Though, on the other hand... I'd rather see him only in 'Dawn of the Dinosaurs' than in a dozen of horrible Ice Age sequels where they ruin his character like they did to Diego.

Heh...good point.

I have to say though, I think the single character who suffered the most with each sequel has to be Sid.  It seems to me he got more annoying and seemed to be more of an obstacle to be endured with each film.  Of course, I found myself liking Crash and Eddie more as time went on...perhaps the fact that they practically worshiped Buck was helpful.

Well, Sid never really was my favourite character, so I never really noticed him changing very much.

But now that you mention it, you might be right. I do get the feeling they make him more stupid with each sequel.

And Crash and Eddie are always fun to watch.

Oh, Buck... you deserve to be in a FAR better movie than the one you're unfortunately stuck in.   And Blue Sky, why... why did you slap us Buck fans in the face by having him stay underground?

Figures, too... the best character they've created in all their films, and with the exception of cheap cameos, they decide to lock him out of the rest of the franchise, presumably forever (unless they return back to that world under the ground... which they probably won't do).  We didn't see Dreamworks force RJ to stay away from the family at the end of his movie, or Surly not showing up again after falling down that waterfall... but oh no, Buck's gotta stay locked away, because god-forbid we actually have a FUN character remain with the group...  Though we all know Buck wouldn't have taken any crap from those pirates, that's for sure.

Well, in any case, great work on this image!  It turned out great, man.  I especially love the detail on the leaf over his eye; the highlights you added really do wonders for it.  Also, gotta say, I do like the background.

Overall, great pic!  Well done.

WHY BUCK, WHY!?!?!?!!

Thanks as always, fellow afficcionado of the  unappreciated. I'd say Buck is to me what Surly is to you...you just wanna get him right!  (Heh, how wonderful it would be to break corporate conventions and the laws of physics, and put these guys in a movie together!  Just a dream of course...Surly's probably gonna get his sequel... )

Your comment brought to mind a couple more side-roads; I have to admit that I half suspected that they were gonna kill off Surly and Raccoon, making me wonder how different our reviews of the film would have been.  (Of course, the makers were probably arrested by concerns of getting all those letters and e-mails from all those parents of traumatized children...

And, I would have just LOVED "Continental Drift" up and down were Buck to show up and hand those (expletive of your choice) pirates their own spleens.

Surly's already getting his sequel.  In fact, they announced it not even a week after the movie hit theaters.  It's scheduled to be released in 2016.

(No, seriously...)

...Normally I'd be a bit more excited to see more of Surly 'n the crew again Or just Surly... 'cause he's awesome, but I don't like how they decided on a sequel so fast.  It... worries me, honestly.  "Wait, our movie MADE MONEY!? FUND THE SEQUEL, FUND IT!!!!!"  In any case, I just hope they know what they're doing... but I'm still apprehensive about the whole thing.  Well, as long as it doesn't turn into an Alpha and Omega situation, then there's at least some hope.

Well, in terms of favorites of mine dying in a movie, Dreamworks did kill off Wolf Boss in Kung Fu Panda 2, and Big Bad Wolf from "Three Little Bops" also died at the end of his cartoon... so I'm sorta used to it by now.  Still, I probably would've sworn off TNJ entirely is Surly had died, considering he's what I liked most about the movie and how big of a fan of him I am.

Agreed.  That would've been a thing of beauty.

Now that you mention it, I recall doing the research for my review of the film and seeing that news on "Yahoo!", and going What? .   I mean, I couldn't even get the review written, and they had hopped that train.  It makes sense, however, when you consider that these "business-minded" financier/planners try to plan every business decision five to ten years in advance, including film production.  Mind you, it's the ONLY way this makes sense.  In every other way, it's succinct insanity.  Your apprehension is well-founded.

Oh, yeah, being a wolf fan, I'm sure you've had intimate experience with the emotional wringer.
