Description Ok guys expect a lot more realism over the next year or so because the AP studio work is about to start. That also means I'll be posting pieces with a LOT more diversity in both subject matter and mediums. I'll probably make a separate folder for my portfolio. But yeah, I did this just to kinda get back in the swing of realism and observational painting and such.

Constructive critique is always appriciated!

eeeep this is so nice YOU'RE SO GOOD LIKE GET OUT. STOP IT. (don't stop it.)

some critique bc i know you run off the stuff:
the super smoothness of the skin is kinda weirding me out, but that could just be my personal preference. it looks great, but i guess my eyes are more trained to painterly pieces?!
the other thing is that i'm sensing a little bit of lack of depth in the irises. i have brown eyes, and when the light hits just right there's a ring of near bright orange towards the bottom. you might try that, it could open up your drawing/add more life/etcetcetc!!

the symmetry and rendering in this is aaaabsolutely overwhelming though. seriously. UGH. (<-"i-hate-you-but-i-actually-don't-you're-great "ugh")

GAH THANKS? LOVE YOU THO <3
And yeah pretty much I agree with all that critique. My main problem with this was the irises looking flat. Also, I've been meaning to mess around with adding skin textures to some of the more realistic stuff but heck idk

Nice study you got there, the shading is pretty accurate! I'm slowly trying my hand at realism, but I can't seem to ditch the "painterly" feel Β

staarpiece In reply to daubed [2014-06-17 13:35:19 +0000 UTC]

You can still do realism with the painterly feel. It just gives it more texture
I actually wish my stuff had more of a painterly feel

Great job on the proportions for realism. I like your style! The eyelashes do look a little fake, though- They're very crisp and black, which makes them seem a bit too harsh and sharp. I like your skin shading, particularly around the eye area. You could add to the realism with skin textures. ^^

staarpiece In reply to Knifapotamas [2014-06-17 04:58:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for the genuine critique! Those are the types of comments I really appriciate
I agree with the eyelashes. Theyre definitely one of the elements of realistic portraits which I struggle with the most. I probably should have used a softer brush and a lighter color. But I'll work on it!
And yeah I agree It could use some more texture. I started using a slightly textured brush for skin, but it could still use a little more.
Thanks again for your feedback! I'll keep working on it!

It looks like youre doing quite well for starting out! The portrait of benedict cumberbatch looks really nice! My biggest suggestion would be to keep on studying from life. Also, while your shading is excellent, having lots of knowledge of the mechanics of light and shadow is also really helpful. Its one of those things that can take your art to the next level. Plus it makes guesswork a lot easier if you know the general shape of what youre painting and the location of your light source, you can paint just about anything
